A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our cumulative list includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance with a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Heheh "is that a phone in your pocket? Or are you just pleased to see me?"

My Royal Nemesis gets an extra point for the cute dog (it’s the rules). Thoroughly enjoying it.

Need something new to start with DH and I think I might do for We Are All Trying Here as he loved My Mister. Possibly Wonderfools although he’s less fond of the craziness so not sure about that.

boatyardblues · 20/05/2026 19:51

That claw machine teddy bear in ep 7 of Filing for Love must have used up about £100 of KRW 😆

After a mini drama watching slump I’m back at it with Straight to Hell on Netflix which is excellent.

Cobol · 23/05/2026 12:02

I'm still loving Absolute Value of Romance, it's my favourite ongoing drama atm. I've also started The Legend of Kitchen Soldier which also looks promising and If Wishes Could Kill which is suitably creepy.

I see they've removed the controversial scenes from Perfect Crown, which seems the best solution. I enjoyed it as a fluffy fantasy romance so the mistakes with the historical references were a real shame. Hopefully without the offending scenes, it can be enjoyed for what it is, which is enjoyable nonsense. I really don't know why the actors' had to do the apologising, though, Korean celebrity culture is quite baffling sometimes.

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/05/2026 12:50

Agree, the actors having to apologise is just bizarre.

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/05/2026 12:52

I did think it was timely in My Royal Nemesis’ episode yesterday when the FL was pointing out historical inaccuracies of the hairstyles and everyone ignored her!

I missed the controversy so had a quick google. 😮 It’s quite nuanced and involves details most foreigners would have missed altogether but seems to have really angered Koreans.

Good explainer in this article: www.msn.com/en-in/news/world/will-perfect-crown-be-cancelled-petition-to-take-show-down-gets-1500-signatures-despite-iu-byeon-woo-seoks-apology/ar-AA23SYjF

I saw some good explanations on Instagram that explained it really well but surely the script writers and costume designers should be apologising, not the actors!

boatyardblues · 23/05/2026 17:56

I’m now pondering the red wine/makgeolli mix in My Royal Nemesis ep 6. It could go either way.

OP posts:
Cobol · 23/05/2026 19:50

I've been trying to work out why Perfect Crown made what must have been more of a choice that went wrong rather than an error made through ignorance and I'm wondering if they went the way they did, making the monarch a "king" (with the vassel state connotations that come with it that has got them in hot water), rather than an "emperor" because the supposed independence Korea had as an empire at the turn of the 20th century was mostly illusionary and heavily influenced by the Japanese who subsequently annexed and occupied Korea. So not a lot of happy associations there either. And in the alternate reality it seems to me that the Japanese occupation needs to have not happened for the monarchy to survive into the present day.
But of course I understand how the depiction of a modern Korean monarchy appearing to still be stuck in an era of subjugation to China might not go down very well.

boatyardblues · Yesterday 21:05

Oh my word, the black & white striped lounge suit in the night club scene in Filing For Love ep 9 is an eyesore. It’s been a while since I’ve seen such ugly fashion. 🙈
