Watched the first episode (having just finished and thoroughly enjoyed the IT Crowd).

Does it get better? Maybe need some more familiarity with the characters before fully appreciating it?

I really enjoyed this programme and found it funny from the first episode. So I can't say it improved really, but I loved it. I really like Bill Bailey but maybe you don't if you didn't enjoy episode 1?

Rosebold · 11/10/2025 15:58

I don't know about you but I love Black Books, it may be my favourite comedy show of all time. I also loved the IT Crowd and Father Ted both amazing but Black Books is his best work in my opinion. I'm pretty sure I found it funny immediately but at least give it another few episodes.

springbabydays · 11/10/2025 16:03

I'll definitely give it another shot!

I loved it at the time but worry if I watch it now I won’t enjoy it as much. I’ve gotten old and I think my sense of humour has changed. Spaced was another favourite.

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/10/2025 16:05

I loved it and have watched it a few times.

Darragon · 11/10/2025 16:06

I usually really like Bill Bailey however when it came to black books, I just didn’t get on with it at all.

Indianajet · 11/10/2025 16:07

I loved Black Books.

Nourishinghandcream · 11/10/2025 16:08

Never watched it at the time but bought the DVD box set a few years ago (on recommendation) and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Have watched it several times since and it never fails to amuse me.

Davros · 11/10/2025 16:12

Me too OP. I tried it long after it had finished and thought I would love it. I just didn’t get on with it but maybe I should try again

I rewatched it this year and still loved it. Was disappointed when I got to the end.

Have you tried eating scrambled eggs, with a comb, from a shoe, whilst watching it?

I assume that will make more sense if I continue watching 😆

Black Books is in my top 3 favourite series, also with Father Ted & Spaced (with Red Dwarf a close 4th), but the first time I watched it I definitely didn’t quite ‘get’ it. I accidentally started with an episode called ‘The Entertainer’ which I still think is one of the best…maybe skip to trying that one 😁

I adore Spaced! I was a teenager when it first came out in the 90s and have since bought it as a virtual box set and watch it every year at least twice! I’ve tried to ‘force’ 😅 my sister and two exes to watch it but they just stare blankly at it lol so not for everyone but I just adore it!

Also still love it, and our teens do as well.

Or even better, Luxury Pie.

How about tiramisu with a long spoon??

Oof, I just swallowed the little book of calm!

Do you have anything in an aquarium?

RaspberryCloud · 12/10/2025 22:35

Too many Black Bookisms have crept into my day to day speech 🙈😂

If you hear any nonagenarian hanky-panky, CALL THE POLICE!

Dustyblue · 12/10/2025 22:42

Dave Syndrome 😂

Love black books and Spaced. IT Crowd I could take or leave though.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/10/2025 23:03

@springbabydays I came late to this show

I really loved the first episode. With the swallowing of the book and the Jehovah's Witnesses and the ending - I actually thought that was a really good episode so I'm not sure what to say.

Maybe you have to be in the right mood for it. I don't think I would've found it funny a few years before I saw it. But my taste changed.

I tried to watch the first episode of Father Ted and I couldn't get on with it at all.

there's a couple of episodes I didn't like, including the one with luxury pie so apologies to that poster.

It fizzled out a bit - did it get cancelled?

Blarn · 12/10/2025 23:06

Try a tower of soup.

springbabydays · 13/10/2025 10:21

@EmeraldRoulette see, I feel quite tepid about Father Ted so I think some shows just appeal to different folk, nothing more nothing less. I think BB is watchable, not terrible but I'm just not engaging with it in the same way as I did with IT Crowd early on.
