Yes, it blinks a red light at me and doesn't work suddenly. I see them on EBay cheap. Will they work for me? Or what? Fed up

Our main Sky box broke, I contacted Sky and they sent me a new one for free as your in contract with them they should do the same for you.

No I don't think they will, as they don't make Sky+ boxes any more. They will force you to have Sky Q instead.

This happened to my elderly parents a few months ago. They find the Sky Q hard to operate, unfortunately. The design of Sky+ was brilliant, if it ain't broke why fix it, Sky? But they will probably give you a deal on Sky Q as they won't want to lose you as a customer.

You could get an old Sky+ box on ebay, and yes it should work if you put your viewing card in it, but who's to say how long it'll last, as it's going to be quite a few years old.

This is one of the reasons why when we moved we ditched Sky, we didn't want to be forced onto Sky Q or one of their other systems. The main reason was the monthly cost though, and not wanting to be tied in to a 2 year contract. We now stream everything on a Smart TV and subscribe to Now as one of the streaming packages, which gets you Sky programmes for a lot less. I think a lot of people are ditching Sky, it's so expensive.

Don't buy one on eBay. I did this week. I plugged it in and about an hour later came back to the room to smell burning and the box was red hot. It was on the point of causing a fire. I did get a full refund and ordered a new one from Sky. I don't think the Sky Q box is any harder to understand than the Sky +. It's better to be safe.

Resist SkyQ as long as you can. DH (against my advice) got it and it's absolutely awful. Impossible to find anything, nearly everything directs you to apps with adverts which you can't scroll through. Deletes stuff off the planner with no notice and randomly gives you stuff you have recorded with people signing on the side.

We have had it over 2 years now and I still hate it with a passion and would go back to Sky+ if I could.

I've not had any of these issues. I really like it.

Oh really? So if you do a series link to record something it stays on the box until you delete it? Maybe there is some setting ours has wrong, as it will not record anything reliably and keep it there! I properly hate the thing!

Thanks Ladies, I am going to try eBay. X

Thank you! This gives me hope that i might be able to so something about it! I will call Sky

We had sky+ and the box stoppped working. Bought a 2nd hand replacement sky+ box and that wouldn’t recognise the viewing card. Apparently sky have changed the settings so the sky box will only recognise the viewing card is was using in October 2024 and will not pair a replacement box to your original card.
the only way forward is to go to SkyQ 😡

RedRiverShore5 · 02/10/2025 19:35

I probably wouldn't get another box because of the pairing of the viewing card issue. We went to Sky Q last year, DH was very reluctant as he is a complete dinosaur with TV, he only watches at the time it's on or record for later and never streams anything but he seems to have taken to it. I find it ok, though having to share a planner with DH is annoying.
