I couldn’t see a thread re the Netflix movie. Im only 15 mins in but Elizabeth in particular is rather different to how she is in my head! What did everyone think of the film?

I imagined Ron would be played by Ray Winstone, when I'm reading the books thats Ron so Pierce Brosnan didn't cut it for me.
I enjoyed it though, watched with 11 Yr old dd, a nice lazy afternoon film.

I think trouble with Pierce Brosnan is that he's so strongly associated with the smooth, debonair James Bond that playing a fiesty old trade union leader is a difficult re-association for the audience to make. I did enjoy his scruffy "I want the lady" Ron though!

Got halfway through and gave up. Pierce Brosnan is completely wrong for it. I like Helen Mirren as Elizabeth but either the writing or the acting has failed to capture the Joyce I imagined. They also seem to have completely failed to capture the charm of the books too. Very disappointing.

Yes the charm, that’s what I think is missing in retrospect

I thought it was a lovely cosy watch, great acting by all. Was super silly.

David Tennant can only do caricatures I think.

My main gripe was that Joyce wasn’t as feisty and Bogdan not so self assured

The whole thing was badly cast although Donna and Steven were good.

I agree about Donna and Steven. Definitely the best cast characters in my view

derxa · 30/08/2025 21:05

Loved it

Zempy · 30/08/2025 21:08

I was FURIOUS about them arresting Bogdan. That doesn’t happen in the book.

Why?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 30/08/2025 21:12

They made Bogdan weirdly helpless when the whole point of the character is how resourceful and cool-headed he is

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 30/08/2025 21:12

Complete shite. Extremely disappointed.
Had been looking forward to it for a long time .
Made myself watch it all, but it lacked any charm or finesse and as much as I love Helen Mirren, I think she got the character all wrong.
All of them were not quite right, really.

Apparently Pierce Brosnan also imagined Ray Winston - he's quoted as saying so. He was surprised to be cast but didn't question it.
Shame June Whitfield wasn't still around to play Joyce.
And where was Danny Dyer?? Surely half the. Characters were perfect for him, especially the main Villain

Ikeameatballs · 30/08/2025 21:35

Donna and Stephen were good, the rest less so. I like Pierce Brosnan but he was poorly cast in this with and accent that travelled across the UK, Ireland and beyond!

GreekGod · 30/08/2025 21:37

I really enjoyed it, haven’t read the book

diddl · 30/08/2025 21:58

I haven't read the book so no idea how the characters are written.

I enjoyed it but it was so sad.

Had to laugh at HM looking like HMTLQ!

Thought Jonathan Pryce was very good.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 30/08/2025 21:59

I've loved Jonathan Pryce ever since Brazil so despite my overall disappointment it was well worth the 90 minutes 😍

Scalextricks · 30/08/2025 22:02

I never read the book, I did find the film mildly entertaining but thought the casting was really odd for some of the characters.

It seemed like a film where they got a bit complacent because they had so many big names so didn't really try and make it sparkle. Disappointing as I could see it had the potential to be good.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 30/08/2025 22:09

I was surprised to see that Richard Osman’s wife got a chunky role in it - quite unashamed nepotism there which I hadn’t expected!

The trouble with Pierce Brosnan is that he can’t act.

i have absolutely no idea what accent he was attempting but it’s one I don’t think any real life person has.

Hepzibar · 30/08/2025 22:38

Well I liked it.
Ive read the books. Loved the casting and although my Ron was more along lines of Ray Winstone, I could happy accept PB.
Loved HM, CI and BK as Elizabeth, Joyce and Ibrahim and the casting for Donna was perfect . Really enjoyed it.

Sheepslippers · 30/08/2025 22:40

Absolute pile of shite. I just don’t think PB can act in anything tbh and was totally wrong for Ron. Very disappointing.

I loved Donna yes, that was well cast. Same for the lead policeman. I also didn't hate all the casting by any means but there were a few clangers and it felt a bit colour by numbers in places.

BaguetteLady · 31/08/2025 00:59

I would never have thought of someone like Pierce Brosnan for Ron.

Ray Winstone, Charlie Creed-Miles, Phil Davis - they could have been Ron.

Deadringer · 31/08/2025 01:07

I rather enjoyed it, despite my reservations around the casting, especially Brosnan as Ron. Like a pp I had someone like Ray Winstone in mind, but he grew on me. I always imagined Mirren as Elizabeth, and the the two coppers were exactly as I pictured them. Coopers Chase is a lot posher than I expected though.

BachAndByte · 31/08/2025 02:44

Yes, agree. When I read the book I thought it sounded almost exactly like one of the retirement villages near me, which is very nice (and has alpacas) but nothing like the filmed version.

BachAndByte · 31/08/2025 02:54

And bizarrely, I just googled what the inspiration was for Coopers Chase and it actually IS the retirement place I was thinking of!

Me too, it was like a massive country estate. I wonder how much the fees are?!
