Does anyone remember watching it at the time.

If so was it any good.

I find sometimes that series written by Stephen Poliakoff can be really intriguing and other times just silly and irritating.

Amazing cast.

I've only just seen your post and realised it's on and I haven't time to watch it now so I've no idea if it was good. The cast - I can see Muriel Pavlow even. Was it the first time I/we ever saw the young Matthew? I remember the BBC making some noise about it if it is. I am no help to you whatever. I will have to watch it on I Player. If you watch it tell us what you think.

I've recorded as I am trying to finish a series I almost with I hadn't started.

It's just with so many of his play, tv series, they start out being really interesting, and then the ending are sometimes so silly it can make you really cross.

I mainly try to watch them because the first one I ever watched was called Shooting the Past and it really made me think about how we can lose the past and not value what it had. But maybe I was young and impressionable as I see it is quite old now!

But dont think any have matched since then.

It’s on the iPlayer for 11 months.

OMG I loved this series when it came out and had it on VHS (!). Must check iPlayer. Also I loved Shooting the Past, Poliakoff is one of my favourite writers.

Nitgel · 21/08/2025 12:02

I watched this the other day as its on iplayer. It's a bit.meandering but I really liked it.

Shooting the past was fantastic. Also on iplayer

LittleBitofBread · 21/08/2025 12:09

I don't remember this at all. It is an absolutely stellar cast, isn't it?
Are the three episodes on the iPlayer all of it?

Nitgel · 21/08/2025 12:40

Yes

IwantToRetire · 21/08/2025 17:05

I didn't realised Shooting the Past was on iPlayer.

I liked it so much that I almost dont want to re-watch as I might not like it any more.

Or not as clever as I thought it was when I was just a young person!

Perfect Strangers is excellent.

IwantToRetire · 22/08/2025 19:55

I have now watched all 3 episodes.

Maybe if I had seen it at the time it was released I would have been a bit more impressed.

But quite honestly all of his plays, series, have the same themes.

Family secrets, class and wealth, the experience of anti semitism.

I dont think I had quite realised how many of the same actors and actresses are in his many tv productions.

Once I got over the shock of the fashions(!) I did enjoy it, but almost because in some ways it was sort of famaliar.

Now I have to decide whether to re-watch shooting the past or leave it as it was for me at the time, very different and thought provoking.

I remember that.

Really enjoyed it at the time.

Wbeezer · 29/08/2025 18:26

I might watch that, just rewatched Shooting the Past with my twenty something history graduate who wants to be an archivist, he really liked it! And guessed it had started out as a stage play which I had forgotten.
