New 6 part drama /thriller starts sat 16th itv

As good as Big Little Lies”: One Night is Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker’s “hidden gem” drama coming to ITV

The six-part hidden gem was originally released on Paramount+ in 2023, but is now coming to ITV and will be available to watch this August.

Created and written by the award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) and directed by Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) as well as Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor, The PM’s Daughter), it's just the sort of thrilling watch we need right now.

While we await One Night's arrival on our screens, here’s everything to know about the series, including the plot, cast and the release date.

The series focuses on three women – formerly childhood close friends – who all reunite in their small coastal hometown after years spent living separate lives.

When one of them, an aspiring novelist, anonymously publishes a book about a traumatic night they shared two decades ago, it becomes a surprise overnight success.

The mystery drama follows three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one fateful night 20 years ago.

All hell breaks loose upon the novel’s release, where fact becomes hard to separate from fiction – and all their friendships threatened in the process.

Filmed between Sydney and New South Wales, the show contains stunning shots of the Australian coast, providing a contrast to the dark secrets bubbling beneath the surface.

As we mentioned, Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker plays a starring role as Tess – having just appeared in Netflix smash Toxic Town (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a63599947/toxic-town-netflix/), and recently landed a role in the forthcoming BBC adaptation of the hit stage show Dear England (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a65329287/dear-england-bbc-one/). Whittaker’s friends in One Night are played by Nicole da Silva (Wentworth, Rush), as Simone, and Orange is the New Black’s Yael Stone as Hat.

“A pitch-perfect drama”: Toxic Town’s Jodie Whittaker has a “challenging” new role in BBC series Dear England

Jodie is teaming up with Sherwood creator, James Graham, for the long-awaited drama.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2025 09:27

He seems to nice to rape and annoyed his name is dragged about hence why I don’t think he did rape her

I've watched two episodes, just in to the third and not sure why I've stuck with it. There's a lot of staring at things in the distance, or phone screens and sighing. I think I might just scrap it and read the reelmockery recaps instead.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/09/2025 14:10

It’s a good story @martinisforeveryone. Keeps you guessing and I think cleverly done

looking forward go the end next week

Morning @Blondeshavemorefun o caught up to episode 5 last night and am prepped to watch finale live tonight. Are you watching live?

@martinisforeveryone i agree the first episode was a bit “why am I watching this?”. Then the thriller elements and what’s going on parts of the story come in. The characters are really well written and acted in my opinion. I love “unreliable narrator” type stuff that makes the viewer do the work to piece together what’s happening and who is what kind of character. It’s a good show. There’s a line in episode 5 where someone says something like once you get past the boring female emotions, it’s quite good about the book - I think it presents itself as a small town friendship drama at first but becomes this much bigger thing. Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun for the recommendation!

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2025 12:00

Yes I will be watching live

Tv guide says it’s on at 10.30pm tonight? Sorry @Blondeshavemorefun I'm not staying up that late! I will start it at 9pm.

I don’t think that’s the way it will go, I don’t think we’ll get a definitive conclusion on what happened that night. Each episode is named Simone, Hat, Tess and it’s about their perspective and the impact on them and their lives 20 years later. I think it was episode 4, where Simone was reliving her account and she said she just couldn’t move just like when a man sat on her feet when she was in bed, and it showed her a small girl - it’s not shown or mentioned again I don’t think. The loose end now is what the retired policeman said, why was the case shut down from higher up? I’m wondering is it something to do with the third unknown person? Was he an important person or an important person’s son or grandson?

The other reason I don’t think we’ll have a definitive conclusion “what happened on the night”, is they have the big storyline with Eden showing it’s become other people’s stories and truth and Simone seemed to realise that that was a good thing, not something taken from her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2025 18:56

Oh god. Is it

no wonder these late night programmes aren’t being seen

should be on 9pm

i may watch at 9 on ITVX but obv not say anything

OP posts:
BakeOffRewatch · 20/09/2025 21:05

Also I don’t think we’ve seen the Calley brothers actually deny it? Only their mum saying it’s all lies. Even Trevor/Tony Calley says “Joey had to have Tess until he had her”.

Going to start it up in 5.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/09/2025 22:12

I just don’t think he did rape her

I seem to still be up and awake so will watch real time in 20

purpleme12 · 20/09/2025 22:13

BakeOffRewatch · 20/09/2025 22:14

I’ve just finished it. Look forward to reading your posts about it tomorrow and I’ll join in then.
