Is anyone else watching this and fancies chatting about it? Am I the one lone watcher in the mumsnet universe?

It is equal parts utterly preposterous and appealing. Scant regard paid to historical accuracy, women in the latter 1800s travelling alone from remote Italian islands to Cornwall in like a day, supersonic bed hopping... But they're all so pretty, including the men, and wear such lovely dresses! I am and more taken with it.

@Karmaisagod I watched it when it first came out.

I bought the book (not read that for a while either), but I loved it back in the day.

I did go to Tintagel as I wanted to see the castle. It was stunning.

I need to dust the DVD off I think. My DD might love it as well.

Where is it being shown and how are you in?

Cornflowers35 · 05/08/2025 21:02

How far in are you, that should read

Karmaisagod · 05/08/2025 23:03

I'm on season 2 episode 6. Are you thinking of the old series? I watched that, too, and loved it. This is a fairly recent one and it's quite different in style and tone. It makes me think of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.

Watched it a bit but the historical ridiculousness got the better of me. And now the ridiculous Dylan Mulvayney has a female role in it, I won't at all.

Yes, I saw that - is it a recurrent role and not just a one-off novelty nonsense at the engagement party, though? I wouldn't enjoy that either.

I was very ready to give it up due to the historical ludicrousness you mention, but then was won over mostly because of the Lizzy-Theo love story. I am a sucker for that kind of thing. And Theo is HOT.

If you've made it that far, the next two episodes are kind of dramatic and genuinely affecting (although I'm primarily hunting for Lizzy-Theo content) and I think the finale comes out today.

I enjoyed the BBC production many years ago and have been watching this version as well. Once I put aside the historical inaccuracies and treated it as American high school drama transplanted to Victorian England - all angst and bustles - I've found it very enjoyable. It's a bit music video at times, but it looks good and there are some lovely costumes.

Cornflowers35 · 06/08/2025 21:28

@Karmaisagod ah thank you.

I didn't realise there was a new version out.

Its so bad it's good. But the teleporting round Europe annoyed me in the last few episodes. The Lady Seton storyline is very sad and a dose of reality after some of the Saltburn inspired daftness.

"treated it as American high school drama transplanted to Victorian England"

@Rhubarb01 that is such a good way of looking at it! Thanks, it really helps put it in some kind of context.

@turkeyboots "teleporting around Europe" exactly 😁. And the magical Bill that will change everything instantly because a 20-year-old who's been a Duchess for 5 minutes wills it so! Lady Seadown is Sukhi Waterhouse's sister, by the way - you can see it especially around the mouth.

Tintagel aka Culzean Castle looks wonderful in it. I went there often as a child and I really enjoy the scenery shots. Definitely nothing like Tintagel though. Any visitors will be very disappointed if they go to the wrong one!
