I watched Downton Abbey on Netflix over the course of a month. Unexpectedly loved it. Should I bother with The Crown?

I loved the first 2 series but not so much the rest.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 30/07/2025 17:16

Yes i really enjoyed it

TheEndlessNight · 30/07/2025 17:20

I would say yes. I loved both Downton Abbey and the Crown.

I loved it - the later seasons are very different to the earlier ones, but it’s very well researched and explores all the various characters nicely. There are no baddies as the back-stories are all covered…

That said, I’m re-watching the William/Kate episodes right now and wondering if Carole Middleton just died in her boots when she saw it. I’d love to know how realistic those bits are!

Love it, especially the earlier seasons

The best seasons of The Crown are an awful lot more sophisticated in terms of writing than Downton Abbey, though I suppose both of them ultimately have the same aim, of trying to make the prole viewer think that aristocrats are exactly like them, really, Gawd bless 'em..

The first 2 series are, in my opinion, fantastic. It gets trickier when they move into living memory.

Thanks for your input...I have bookmarked The Crown. I thought about Belgravia too, but not available on Netflix where I am.

I started watching the second series of Belgravia the other week but couldn't get into it at all. Might join you with a re watch of the Crown.

I love these types of programmes. Just finished watching the Forsyte Saga ready for whenever the new re make comes out, that was good.

I’m halfway through my first watch of Downton - I’ve just got to the episode in which Lady Sybil gives birth (I already know what happens at the end)

Having read this thread I’m tempted to take a break from Downton and start a rewatch of The Crown - I’ve already watched it all, the first four seasons twice, but could have it on in the background while doing other things. It’s brilliant!

If you haven’t watched The Forsyth Saga on Netflix OP, I really think you would love it. Some of the Crown was very good, a lot of it a bit meh.

I’d definitely recommend the Crown. Like others have said, the first two are the best. And yes the Kate/William bits later on are very cringy, I think I couldn’t finish it!

CarpetKnees · 31/07/2025 17:54

I came very late to The Crown, but loved it.
I think it is incredibly well written, cast, and acted.

Cynic17 · 31/07/2025 18:07

Yes, but be aware that it's not a documentary, so some bits of it are very definitely made up!
But, as mentioned, the first two series are excellent ...... and then you're hooked in.
