A Town Like Alice

So, having exhausted all the excellent Aussie dramas, recommended on here, I tried 'Darby and Joan'.
It's daft, but led me to Google Bryan Brown, which reminded me that, I watched 'A Town Like Alice' whist I was babysitting.
So, I binged it, yesterday, and there's so much more to it, than I appreciated, as a 12 year old!

I'm wondering if I have the stomach to revisit 'Tenko.'

I recently binged 'The Jewel in the Crown', for similar reasons, ie, I saw Art Malik in something, and it reminded me of being a teenager, just noticing men...(I babysat a lot!).

It made me realise that the 70s/80s were actually a really good time for TV- even the 'fluff' like 'Heart to Heart' and 'Chips' 😂

Any other suggestions?

I remember watching A Town Like Alice.
Where did you watch it?

Have you watched The Thornbirds?

WorthySloth · 15/07/2025 10:08

A town like Alice is one of my favourite books. Reread it almost every year. Read it after watching the tv series.

i rewatched tenko a few years ago. Still incredible.

also still love the golden girls 😊

I watched in on YouTube. Terrible quality, just how I remembered it on the tiny, square TV I originally saw it on!

I've watched some Thorn Birds trailers, but don't actually remember it.
My job was to babysit, but also to record the parents' programmes, on a tape machine.
So, I wouldn't really watch what they liked. I couldn't, for example, Dallas or Top of the Pops

Definitely watch Tenko again. I did so a couple of years ago and found it just as gripping… maybe even more so ( certainly could identify more with the middle aged women. )

Lellamir · 15/07/2025 19:26

Ooh, I've found Tenko on ITV.
Quality is better than 'Alice' on YouTube. The beginning is very similar, though, as is 'Jewel in the Crown'.
I might not make it all the way; since I had children, I'm a wimp.

I also binge watched Tenko a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lives and Loves of a She devil was my babysitting viewing .
Loved Thornbirds & Tenno
Also Mackenzie which no one I know remembers - a very young Lynda Bellingham & Tracey Ullman were in it .

How funny I watched this yesterday! I cried a lot and still have puffy eyes!

ThirdStorm · 16/07/2025 12:19

You can watch the 80s TV adaptation of Len Deighton's Game Set and Match on YouTube. So terribly 80s but amazing locations, makes you think you were in the cold war.

Lollygaggle · 16/07/2025 12:25

I rewatched I Claudius recently. Once you got over the “stageyness” of the production it was even better than I remembered with superb performances by everyone not just the classical thesps.

EBearhug · 16/07/2025 12:31

I watched To Serve Them All My Days recently, having read the book - they had changed some bits, but it was good. I had it on DVD, so I don't know if it's available through streaming. I've got Flambards lined up st some point.

(I never saw most of these first time round, as we didn't have a TV.)

EBearhug · 16/07/2025 12:33

Also, I suspect there was lots of rubbish TV too, but it doesn't get made available so much now.

Although these days, there's no test card, just 24/7 broadcasting with most channels, so there are many more hours to fill, and it's not all quality TV...

A Town Like Alice is one of my favourite books too ❤️ Seeing this thread got my hopes up thinking the tv-series with Brian Brown is available to watch!

I recently’ish found Bangkok Hilton on Youtube. It is so very 80’s but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

RachelsPeeves · 16/07/2025 12:43

I watched Edge of Darkness again recently - it's on YouTube, also my favourite kids show of all time. A Break in the Sun

Does anyone know the name of a film ive seen years ago but never knew the name.
I`ll explain it the best i can with what i remember.
Its an old film a woman saving loads of kids they had to walk miles and miles i remember the ending (i think it was the ending) where she walks through town with them all.

EstherGreenwood63 · 16/07/2025 13:25

I read the books before seeing the series (a Town like Alice). My mother didn't like Richard Chamberlain so no Thorn birds in our house!

The books are actually really good (both)

Thank you ive just googled it i think it is the one.

Much more modern, but I have just finished Bay of Fires. Outstanding. Marta Dusseldorp is amazing. This is such a fabulously-acted, unexpectedly quirky and tight thriller. So much going for it.
