U&Drama is showing Tenko. The first two episodes of the first series (set in Singapore before they're in a camp) were on today. Looks like it's being broadcast on weekdays, 7.25am and the next episode at 2.00pm. It's available online too.

Thanks! Don't know the channel but I'll find out more.

tobee · 11/07/2025 17:48

I saw it when it was repeated a few years ago, can't remember the channel now.

When it was on originally I didn't watch and thought it looked a bit dull. How wrong I was. It's very moving and so hard to fathom the situation that ordinary women (and men) were in. How startlingly different to my life.

Loved this, it was one of the best things we watched back in the day. Me and my mum used to watch it together.

southchinasea · 11/07/2025 21:38

@haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday my dad was an extra in Tenko too! He was teaching English in Singapore at the time - lots of his expat colleagues were in it too.

SewerOrLess · 11/07/2025 21:49

Watched it at the time and re-watched it a couple of years ago. So good to have a female centric drama.

My son is on deployment and has been in Singapore recently. He went to Raffles and had a Singapore Sling!

CoraPirbright · 11/07/2025 22:03

@haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday Aah, they probably knew eachother! Mine lived there for 20+ years, teaching in government secondary schools and junior colleges. He loved it. At the time Tenko was filmed I think he lived on Wessex estate, off Portsdown road.

Mine went out with the Army as a teacher then stayed. St John’s School which eventually morphed into UWCSEA!
I was born and brought up there!

Is Ed Reardon credited?

southchinasea · 11/07/2025 22:21

@haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday I visited regularly in the 80s and 90s and then lived there for 2 years as an adult, teaching at Dover Court prep school, next door to UWC!

Noseyoldcow · 11/07/2025 22:24

Watched Tenko series years ago and loved it. Then was lucky enough to visit Singapore. My goodness, what that island went through during the war. Visiting Changi was a very sobering experience.

Oh yes, on Portsdown road? We used to go and swim at the Temasek club and visit the Colbar, both very nearby.

CarpetKnees · 11/07/2025 23:27

Watched it when it was first on.
Superb series.

LadyGreySpillsTheTea · 11/07/2025 23:37

It was a big thing when it came out in our family because my grandfather had spent 16 months in Changi and then three years in a POW camp on Hokkaido.
He found watching the show quite cathartic and said it was fairly reflective of his own experience, even though male soldiers were obviously treated somewhat differently from female civilians.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 12/07/2025 07:07

I watched this when it was first on and watched it again a few years ago. It's a great show.

cariadlet · 12/07/2025 08:36

Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't realised it was on again.

I watched it with my sister and my mum when it first came out, back in the 80s. When it was repeated a few years ago, I watched it with my dd and was so pleased that she loved it as much as I did.
