Handmaids Tale has broken me

Just watched final episode 10 and it’s totally broken me. I sobbed my way through it. I’ve watched the entire series and read all the books. I don’t know why I got so upset. The loss of her child, the loss of Nick, the sacrifice of the commander on the plane, the reunions… Did anyone else find it very emotional? I just want to go and give my children the biggest cuddle ever.

With regards to Nicole/Holly….. it always bugs me that it was assumed she was Nick’s daughter. The assumption was that Fred was sterile - but he got Serena pregnant. So there’s a chance that he was actually the father of June’s baby too.

I completely agree! For ages I thought that at some point there'd be a big reveal that she was Fred's all along.

I loved E9. Really loved the scene where Lawrence told Naomi that she should continue to read The Little Princess. Also loved the aeroplane scene and I welled up.

I felt sorry for Nick - firstly, he was only put in the position of betraying The Plan because June sent him back to get the stuff from the safe. Secondly, June betrayed her handmaid friends when she told the authorities where they were hiding at Esther's farm so she's not morally superior.

I think Nick really wanted a stable family. He wanted it to be with June and Nichole but when he finally realised that was impossible he thought he could have it with Rose and their baby.

I loathed E10. Soooooo boring. Nothing happened except for Janine getting Charlotte back.

The Testaments is awful. Atwood sold out on the success and mainstreaming of the TV series.

The Handmaids Tale is an iconic book that stands the test of time, The Testaments much more of a beach read with everything neatly tied up.
I was not a fan!

I think Nick is a grey character

I think they're all grey characters. None of them were completely good or completely bad. Even June did some v questionable things. They all moved along a spectrum of good and bad throughout the story.

I agree about Nick being a morally ambiguous character. He loved June and Holly/Nicole, but that was it. He wasn't a Gilead believer - he had no convictions, he was just interested in a comfortable life for himself.

Did he even love Holly/Nicole? I remember him sending her a doll once but I think that was it. When he was talking about escaping to Paris with June, I can’t remember if he mentioned taking their daughter?

In the episode where Nick asked June to go to Paris with him I recall him saying that her mum, Holly, and their child Nichole could meet up with Nick and June at the airport, so they could all go to Paris.

I got the impression that he did care for June and Holly/Nichole but chose to stay with Rose after realising all was lost between him and June.

I loved the whole series, and yes I cried multiple times in the Finale episode

Thanks, I’d completely forgotten that bit.

Glad I could help 😃

I've finally finished watching the series. I thought it was a fitting end. We'd have been left wondering what happened to June and to Gilead otherwise. I was surprised how moving I found it, especially when she went back to the house at the end.

I cried through the last two episodes. E9 more so.

I kind of can’t believe that it’s over. And the horrible things that people do to each other.
