Recommendations for sedate viewing

I just finished a series where the main protagonist went through 12 major life events in the space of 6 months. It was great...but I need something more ...sedate and slow to balance it out 😅

Any recommendations?

Have you see Mum, on BBC iPlayer, recommended for sedate and gentle humour.

Also Magpie Murders and the subsequent series Moonflower Murders, again both on BBC IPlayer and both murder mysteries, but they go at a very civilised pace.

And all three star Lesley Manville - can you tell I'm a bit of a fan? 😃

The Marlow Murder Club series

Signora Volpe is excellent with Emilia Fox on UKTV Play.

Hopefully some of those will appeal.

Thank you so much! I haven't actually used BBC iPlayer much, sounds like something I need to peruse much more. I'm going to start with your first suggestion:)

Mum is such a lovely comedy. Detectorists is equally as gentle.

Last Tango in Halifax, on I Player, funny, gentle, sad…great cast.

If you have Apple TV, then Ted Lasso.

BunnyRuddington · 20/04/2025 07:58

Schitt’s Creek on Netflix too.

Seconding both of these! Maybe Ghosts? Also on iPlayer

Lovejoy is on some catch-up services I believe

pasinphoebe · 21/04/2025 23:07

Definitely Detectorists. Gentle but funny, love Toby Jones

I was also going to say Mum and Detectorists. This Country is also great. Less grown up than the previous two but very funny and slow-paced.

Early Doors on bbc iplayer is good.

RepublicOfPirates · 06/05/2025 12:55

Our Flag Means Death on player, highly recommend.

I read an article where James Corden said one of the reasons they wrote Gavin and Stacey was because he wanted to write something where nothing much happened. Is Dor dead? No, she’s just asleep.

You’ll have to trust me on this but Gone Fishing with Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse is an absolute delight. The perfect antidote to what you’ve been watching.

I also vote for Detectorists and Early Doors.

I also enjoyed Man like Mobeen, King Gary, Motherland.

Are you just looking for sedate drama or sedate TV generally? We’re really enjoying something called The Secret Life of Books atm-it’s basically about the background and writers and settings of famous books. It’s lovely. House of Games and any cookery programme by Nigel Slater is guaranteed to lower the blood pressure!
