Has anyone else watched it?

That poor man, he's lost everything. I felt so sorry for his partner as well, he pretty much abandoned her for months when she'd just had a baby. I can understand how she can never forgive him for that - even though he was in an impossible situation. It was the one time when she really needed him.

Awful. At the end I felt so bad. I was hoping it wasn’t his mum. Unbelievable

PerkyGreenCat · 01/04/2025 15:37

Yeah, that was the most shocking part. As I was watching it, I was thinking "I bet she isn't his mother and she just found his details online and impersonated his mother" but then when the DNA test came back that she was! How could she do that to him when he'd welcomed her into his life? Truly awful.

Watched it yesterday. Utterly gobsmacked at how laid back he seemed about the whole thing considering how it cost him his relationship with his partner and child. 3 months in Zurich to sign paperwork when she was at home with a newborn? She had more patience than I would have done. His belongings would have been in boxes on the pavement after a fortnight.

PerkyGreenCat · 01/04/2025 18:42

Yeah, I was surprised at how chilled out he was about it. They were both talking about how much they loved each other at the start so I thought they were going to say they've got back together.

They were groomed by his mum. She paid for extravagant things for them when they first met her, she knew all the luxury restaurant and hotel staff. She promised them financial security and they had no reason to doubt her after she'd been splashing the cash.

I don't think his partner had any family in the UK so she was stuck until she was feeling up to travelling alone with the baby to New Zealand. No mean feat for a first time mum with a newborn. From what I could gather, she went back to her family as soon as she could and then didn't come back.

So he hasn't seen his son in 5 years!?

She had patience because they thought she was a dying billionaire...

Awful for all of them, I was so sad that they didn't reconcile.

TheChosenTwo · 01/04/2025 22:16

I commented on one of these the other day and just thought they were all so money hungry and greedy. Not that I think they deserved what happened to them, but they were so blinded by it and the lure of cash that they allowed their greed to lure them into her stupid trap.
awful woman.

FatLarrysBanned · 01/04/2025 22:22

@TheCheeseTax Agree. It was a real shame it split them. Also I suppose the wife didn't realise when he was in Zurich that he had already been spending tens of thousands of their own money paying for the hotels/champagne lifestyle.

Very Inventing Anna. They all parted with their money willingly I suppose in the hope they would get it back and more.

She really was a dreadful woman.

BeyondtheBeyond · 01/04/2025 22:29

I think that he had had a very traumatic childhood. His mother abandoned him as a baby, he was in foster care for a couple of years and then his father was abusive to him.I think he was just looking for his mum to love him.
I thought it was sad he wasn’t there for his own son.

Brooklyn70 · 02/04/2025 12:11

just watched it and it bothered me how at the end i feel he’s taking a dig at Heather by saying how his friends in London helped him and acted as his family.

he literally abandoned her and their son weeks after he had been born. I would like to think it was more because he thought she was dying rather than because of her alleged money.

But still, I would like to believe I would have chosen my partner and son, who unfortunately is now growing up without a dad.

why can’t he move to NZ and be close to him?

also, what was her lame excuse that she couldn’t have access to her funds due to Covid? everything can be done electronically nowadays and if she was that wealthy, surely she would always have an easy access account with loads of money.

SunsetCocktails · 02/04/2025 18:17

I felt sorry for him, but only up to a point. Abandoning your partner and newborn for months on end for a mother who hasn’t give a shit about you for 45 years? If she was really that rich she could have used her resources to track him down many, many years before. A cynical part of me thinks he was more interested in the lavish lifestyle and supposed millions than his actual ‘mother’. I can’t blame Heather for upping and leaving. Agree with a pp that he doesn’t seem too bothered by the fact he’s thousands of miles away from his son.

PerkyGreenCat · 02/04/2025 22:10

He came across as a really nice guy at the start but then it showed him living it large drinking champagne in luxury hotels whilst the woman he loved was struggling on her own with his baby and no support around her.

There was a bit at the end where he made a comment about not being in his son's life just like his mother. It did make me think why didn't he move to New Zealand. I know it would screw up his career but surely his child is more important.

I don't blame Heather for moving out there, she had to think of herself and her baby. He's shown that they can't rely on him and they don't have anyone else in the UK.

I still feel sorry for him but on reflection, I don't think he was the super nice guy he was made out to be.

I agree @PerkyGreenCat. By the end I don’t think he was shown in a very favourable light, but I’m not sure he was aware how he came across.

EachandEveryone · 03/04/2025 17:13

I’ve just watched it. Unbelievable. Something tells me that wasn’t his first child hadn’t he been married before?

EdithBond · 14/04/2025 00:17

Wow. What a tale.

Very similar modus operandi to The Tinder Swindler. Splashing cash to begin with to make themselves seem legit and gain trust. But that’s all funded by the previous person in the chain. Playing on people’s belief they’ll have a wealthy lifestyle, so nothing to worry about. Though, she was even more plausible because all the staff at luxury hotels, banks etc knew her. So, easy to see how people could fall for it. That’s an elaborate and long-standing con.

Also, interesting how age appeared to be a factor: “Grandma” etc. If you’re a sweet old lady, who insists on calling people ‘grandson’, seems people are less suspicious. Likewise, she manipulates cultural (Asian reciprocation of gifts) and religious (getting people to pay for the Haj trip, which is also despicable)

The twist was a sucker punch, given the title. I was left wondering if she tampered with the DNA test. Intercepted the post or fake email. If she’s been at it for years internationally, who knows what she’s capable of. I don’t think they look very alike.
