A revival from the 70s, in my opinion, AFAW is one of the best TV series ever made. It follows the experiences of the Ashton family from the outbreak of the second world war, focusing on the domestic front. It is genuinely gripping and moving.

I have been humming the beautiful.theme tune for days!
Google tells.me that it is Vaughan Williams' 6th Symphony in E minor.
Another thing that occurred to me is that tonight was the third episode and the war hasn't actually started. Instead we have been given a gradual introduction to the main characters. We know them, their faults, their dilemmas.
One character spent half the show chasing round to find his wife because he"s been called up and posted away immediately. It was truly tense. I miss the careful building up characters in many modern dramas. Inthe 70s they neither rushed it or skipped it.
Anyway, I am fully engaged already.
