I think we need a petition to get Kai and Lauren back with celebrities next year!

Absolutely! I'm baffled why neither had one this series

dapsnotplimsolls · 08/12/2024 20:53

I've only been aware of who the ringers are in the last few years.

TennisWithDeborah · 08/12/2024 21:14

I’m with the majority, I’m not so fond of professional dancers in their twenties or early thirties being contestants. It seems inequitable.

I don’t mind someone like Debbie who had earned a living from dance as a twentysomething decades prior. Likewise Sarah and maybe actors like Kym, Will Mellor, Jake Wood who were trained at stage school (presumably) a quarter of a century earlier. Those people will ensure that Blackpool isn’t awash with duffers but they won’t be consistently brilliant and barely distinguishable from their pro from week one.

I think they always need a spare - like how Lauren was needed. Also there were fewer women contestants.

MagdaLenor · 08/12/2024 21:16

@TennisWithDeborah - I agree with your points completely.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 08/12/2024 21:19

Denise van Outen and Caroline Flack were also quite ringery (didn't Caroline have a dance degree?).

My take on ringers is that there are ringers and then there are Ringers with a capital Rrrrr. Last year was the first time where it felt that they were taking the absolute piss by having Layton as a contestant and it'll take a lot to out ringer him. Tasha is close to Layton but he was the ringiest ringer of all time.

Then there are people who've had some dance training or a lot of dance training but they're older and they last worked as a dancer years ago, so Sarah and Debbie McGee.

Looking up Danny Mac I see that he got some training at RADA and has a degree in acting as well. I'm surprised. Anyway, he was ringing but I don't see any dance training in his past but he had worked in two musicals, Les Mis and Wicked. He was my dream ringer, not so ringy that it was cross making, ringy enough that he was an absolute joy to watch.

I'm hoping that next year they hold back on obvious ringers. It's not fair on the ringer because at some point they'll feel as though they're deeply unpopular when all that's wrong is the public don't like obvious ringers. They won't win but they will almost certainly be in the final and that can leave some real "What ifs". This year for example I'd have loved to have seen Montell in the final but whether she went last week or this week it wasn't going to happen, partly because there's a ringer in the house. People who wanted Pete in the final could say similar but I'd argue - although not vociferously - that Montell was a true beginner who really learned how to dance well. But water under the bridge. Etc

There are arguments in favour of ringers. Some say that without them it could be a bit clod hoppery, but that doesn't really sit with me because you can have a technically excellent dancer who does nothing for you and throughout most of the show for a lot of people that's been Tasha. She's pretty, has lovely movement, a beautiful body and I think she's probably a really nice person but she's also bland and so is her dancing. To be fair I don't think she's been helped by Aljaz who has been quite poor this season and I really wish he'd stayed away and not sullied my love for him as a sweet chap and a lovely dancer.

In short, I type far too many words to say very little indeed. Discuss. Please don't discuss!

Danny Mac did a MT degree at arts ed before RADA which is provides a very high quality dance training- he had much better dance training than Tasha. I love him, and voted for him, but he is an absolute ringer on a Layton level,

Defiantlynot41 · 08/12/2024 23:05

Did anyone else think the white negiglee that Carlos was wearing was pure Yootha Joyce aka Mildred in Man About the House?

BogRollBOGOF · 08/12/2024 23:05

I got the outcome I was hoping for Grin

All 4 finalists are well-deserved to be there for performance or journey.

Pete finished with dignity and left on a high with a half-decent dance.

I agree that Tash could well have done better with Kai, and her dances could have had more depth of feeling with him. I enjoyed watching that waltz again, it was the most connected dance that she's done. She seems like a very pleasant person, I just haven't been moved to vote for her dancing, as high quality as it has been.

WHY is JB’s wife at every bloody rehearsal? Fair play to Lauren for putting up with it.

I've picked up on this. Strikes me that she keeps an eye on him generally.

She's a ringer.
They never get the votes.

They do though.
Sarah trained at a good Dance School and was in the West End in a physically demanding Musical - CATS. It doesn't matter how long ago she performed, it's obvious that she has continued to work out and keep supple and fit. It is also far far easier to pick up steps when you already have had the training.
I personally don't agree with ringers being in the show. They have an unfair advantage.
And here she is, in the final like Layton.

I notice it did the rounds of the pros and ended up on Neil!

Samcro · 09/12/2024 08:02

a quick google shows that Tash is a dancer. I find it odd that Layton got so much grief last year, yet Tash hasn't.

awaynboilyurheid · 09/12/2024 08:12

I don’t mind ringers I enjoyed watching Leyton and Nikita dance, their Argentine tango was truly phenomenal but I never want them to win!
Mind you I didn’t realise Danny Mac was a ringer oh my goodness I loved him and Oti dancing together. Still miss Oti but Lauren has my dance girl crush now!
I suppose I should have guessed about Danny Mac because he was good from week 1 a bit like Tasha a beautiful dancer and I’m sure works very hard but no real big improvement from week 1 so I can’t get worked up to vote for her even if I enjoy her dances.

Except you just have to look at this thread and there are plenty of posters saying she's a professional dancer, she shouldn't be on the show etc. Comments on other social media are similar.

A lot of people took against Layton for a host of reasons, including in some cases straight-up racism and homophobia, and used the fact that he was a super-ringer to excuse it.

Tasha is nice but bland and "just" gets the normal level of negativity that most female ringers get these days, (with a side order of flack for her speech as a deaf person). I've seen loads of people saying that she shouldn't be in the final at all which is mad IMO.

On the other hand she doesn't seem to have the significant positive fan base that Layton acquired. Remember that he dominated the vote on tour. Also I'm guessing that her disability would make it very difficult for her to take the obvious next step for a ringer which is West End musicals.

MagdaLenor · 09/12/2024 08:28

Tasha previously was a dancer on music videos, so maybe she could continue to do that? It will probably open up presenting jobs etc.

Samcro · 09/12/2024 09:46

i think i find ringers like tash boring because from week 1 you know they will be in the final.
last night the cheek of motsi saying how good punam's cc was.
yet she got booted.

Punam didn't get booted off with the CC routine though, did she?

@FagsMagsandBags completely agree on "grades" of ringer. In my head there are three/four categories:

  • genuine beginners, some of whom have additional disadvantages (Chris and some of the paralympians spring to mind)
  • performers/presenters who have some training in their background but have never maintained/used it. Not sure they are greatly advantaged over a super fit disciplined athlete.
  • "ringer-ish" - former professionals who have maintained fitness (Debbie McGee), actors who have done some regular dance/routine learning and performing
  • Layton/Ashley/Tasha with Layton being the ultimate ringer

I'm quite happy watching the celebs getting 4s and 5s in the early weeks and watching the progression but the group I'd exclude from the competition is group four above. Group 3 should provide enough "amazingly good beginners" to vary the scores in the early weeks.

Wasn't there some story during the show about Chambers wanting to learn to dance for his wedding? Shameless.

Edited

Yes his PR was brilliant and wasn't he the hearthrob doctor in some soap?
I remember my DM voting for him having no idea that he had extensive dance experience before the show and having read the whole wedding schtick.

Denise van Outen and Caroline Flack were also quite ringery (didn't Caroline have a dance degree?).

Yes she had a diploma in Creative/Performing Arts from a college in Cambridge - Bodywork. My dance teacher knew one of her instructors.
