Anyone else watched this?

I just finished it this evening, thought it was a bit slow to get going but glad I stuck with it.

Really enjoyed the ending and lots of twists and turns I didn't see coming.

Yes, I finished it yesterday. Still not sure what I thought! It was definitely scarier at the start than the end. Though a lot of twists that I didn't see either!

Finished it last night. I really enjoyed it. Had to read some plots explained, online, after because there were a few bits I didn't get. I have a question but don't want to spoil the plot 🤔

spiritgoat · 02/11/2024 09:19

I thought it was a slow burner too. I was only fully interested by the final episode.
I don't think the paranormal element was even necessary to include as it was just completely unrelated to the plot. With the name literally being the burning girls I thought the supernatural would feature far more.

It did leave some questions that I had to google at the end. But I think Samantha Morton is fab so I didn't hate it.

I think the burning girls were rebellious like joy and merry. I think you were supposed to draw parallels.

spiritgoat · 02/11/2024 09:28

@mrsnjw yeah, I think someone mentioned in an episode that the burning girls were thought to 'take over' the girls of the town or something. It just seemed like a very small part of the story to then head where it did, iyswim?

mrsnjw · 02/11/2024 09:29

I wasn't sure about the whole wigley and Rosie partnership. It was a bit bizarre 🤔

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 02/11/2024 10:44

There was definitely a theme of young girls being harmed by religion that ran all the way through it.

I thought Samatha Morton did a great job as did the girl who played her dd.

The paranormal element were okay but I thought the police were less than useless though 🤦‍♀️😂 for a family to go missing and no one to have checked the well at any point?

No murder enquiries for any of the missing people?!

You would hope in rl the police would be a bit more thorough 😬

What era would you have said merry and joy were teenagers? Late 70s early 80s. I guess policing was different then🤔

I think it was the 90s??

Really? Gosh thought it was earlier than that.

Etincelle · 02/11/2024 15:22

I've started watching it and I'm enjoying it. I've not read the other replies as I've only watched the first episode.

Etincelle · 03/11/2024 16:31

Sorry, but why is the criminal guy attacking people? I'm sure they will have explained but I've forgotten. Was it to do with the little girl Ruby that was killed by her carers? I'm on episode 5 now

mrsnjw · 03/11/2024 16:44

SPOILERS No that was Merrys brother Jacob. He killed the priest that was raping her when she was fifteen. He was probably about ten. They released him early from prison and he went to find Merry.

I didn't get this either!

What was the point of the burning girls? They're just... portentous ghosts? But nothing else has anything to do with them? And what's with the preponderance of teenage psychopaths? Why are there so many unrelated strands of weird shit in this village? Why is Simon Harper still so important?

I love Samantha Morton and I would love to see her in something cheerful (seriously - has she had a happy ending since Emma?!), but this was disjointed and odd and I have so many unanswered questions.

Nice to see Nigel from Eastenders, though.

ChaosHol1 · 04/11/2024 22:11

I've just started watching it, one episode left but not had any twists I wasn't expecting yet.

Longleggedblond · 05/11/2024 22:01

Finished last episode. Was other woman well Merrys mum?

mrsnjw · 05/11/2024 22:02

Yes it was joy and merry mum down the well.

Longleggedblond · 06/11/2024 11:16

cheers thanks

rainra · 09/11/2024 13:46

I just finished and I'm confused haha.

Why was Joy in Merry's house in the end?

mrsnjw · 09/11/2024 14:05

She went back to find her and run away with her I think.
