The 'uncanny valley' effect is fascinating & was coined by a Japanese roboticist to describe that sense of unease or 'offness' that people feel when a robot appears almost human like but crucially not fully human like.
Autistics (some, not all) can often provoke an uncanny valley feeling in neurotypicals because they don't quite behave like the NT population. Being too flat & expressionless, having a slightly robotic or monotonous way of talking, not gesticulating & bring very still/controlled, laughing in the wrong places etc. It can weird people out without them being able to put their finger on why.
It's heartbreaking to watch as a mother.
