Gosh Rupert is horrible! There is no justification for groping taggie. Surprised everyone else is fine with it (bar Sarah who is jealous)

Are the blokes supposed to be 40 or 50? As Rupert and Tony went to school at sane time they and Declan seem to be 50 but I thought Rupert was 40 in the book?

I've just watched this episode.

Don't know why as I don't like any characters & with this sort of thing it doesn't to me work as a fun watch either.

So RCB so far is a mannerless, charmless sleaze with a side streak of nasty.

He must have one hell of a redemption arc.
(Not a euphemism!)

LoafofSellotape · 24/10/2024 08:15

It's very of its time, it was set and written a long long time ago.

A long, long time ago.

I was in my 20s!

Groping staff/a neighbours daughter was never "the done thing" though was it?

Why? I mean.. why do you assume there will be a redemption arc?!
Not going to go any further as no spoilers. But the point of Rupert is that he's reprehensible.

OK.

I know who he marries so figured things would change.

... but as we know, marriage doesn't change Rupert!

I can't remember reading about after they marry.

But so far I can't think why she'd marry him at all.

Oh dear, spoilers

Is there not a non spoiler thread somewhere?

Sluj · 24/10/2024 16:25

Probably, but the title of this one suggests it is to discuss episode 2 and not reveal the end

It was never the done thing but it was done, think back to walking past a building site ,the wolf whistles and cat calling were awful, being groped in busy pubs ,urghhhh, utterly grim. Things are better now thank God.

No, Rupert is younger than Tony in the book. Rupert was friends with Tony's younger brother Basil at school.

LoafofSellotape · 24/10/2024 18:09

He apologises to Taggie so it's all fine anyway. 🙄🤣

This really, Rupert’s behaviour is very of its time. Very common for staff in restaurants where men were having business lunches to have to endure similar behaviour - at least that’s what I remember reading. Men were much less respectful of women’s boundaries, even the term boundaries is quite new really.

pasta · 24/10/2024 18:24

I worked in the champagne bar at Henley when I was a student - ten years later than Rivals and got groped fairly commonly. Vile behaviour, I would hope that it no longer goes on but I bet it does

vincettenoir · 28/10/2024 21:49

It doesn’t read very well to a modern audience and it’s definitely a hard watch too. It’s gross.
