BBC iplayer. I haven’t read the book but I adore Lennie James. I’ve only seen one episode but it’s pulled me right in and not what I expected.

i hope the rest of it is as good.

I’ve watched four now and have had to slow it down. I’m just loving it. I hope one of you watch it soon 😀

It's had glowing reviews. Going to watch it at the weekend. Can't wait!

WomanInTheBoat · 15/10/2024 20:49

Just finished episode 4 - soooooo good!!

EachandEveryone · 15/10/2024 20:59

i know I’ve had to send myself to bed so I do t binge it all in one go. I’m loving it. The music is great and seeing familiar parts of London. Has it said what he did for a living? He seems to have a good pension😀. Every time I see the house in the flash backs I can’t help wondering how much it must be worth now!

In the book he works in some kind of factory but also buys dilapidated buildings, renovates and rents them out, which is where majority of his wealth comes from.

EachandEveryone · 16/10/2024 20:14

I’ve finished it, I’ll wait for you all. I’ll be interested to know if it’s true to the book.

Just started ep 4. Really enjoying it so far. I haven't read the book but may do after this.
I love the colours, the music, the sights of Hackney. Great stuff!

TurtlesDoNotPetsMake · 17/10/2024 19:45

Ooh, will go see. Lennie James is my favourite actor.

GinandGingerBeer · 17/10/2024 19:49

The book was brilliant. I'm always reluctant to watch a tv adaptation of a book I've enjoyed but I'll give it a try now as it sounds like you really enjoyed it @EachandEveryone

dollopofsauce · 18/10/2024 10:20

I've just finished the series, it was wonderful.

repeatpleaseagain · 18/10/2024 12:10

I thought it was beautifully done (there's another thread being sniffy about it - dont know why) costumes especially just right - were the Antigua scenes shot there? Its a stunning place!

EachandEveryone · 19/10/2024 21:58

I don’t think there’s anything sniffy about and I never understand it when people say they don’t find any character likeable so they stop watching it.

Just finished it after bingeing this weekend. Absolutely loved it. The set and colours took a little while to adjust to, the kitchen just looked like the set of a play for example, but then I loved how vivid they were.

The acting was incredible and I cried more than once (though I cry at everything tbh!).

When can we start discussing characters and spoilers?!

EachandEveryone · 21/10/2024 11:17

Idont know! Iwant to discuss the ending. It mustve been based on a true story I reckon.

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 21/10/2024 20:45

I have watched it all and think it's one of the best things the BBC has done in a long time. I can't believe there isn't more chat about it. It was a brilliant drama about imperfect people dealing with difficult circimstances and the ways in which they hurt themselves and each other. Wonderfully acted and heartbreaking.

EachandEveryone · 21/10/2024 21:16

yes it was I just have a problem with the party. Can I say as it doesn’t look like anyone’s coming on here?

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 22/10/2024 08:02

I'm happy to talk about the ending...

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/10/2024 08:20

I've been watching in real time not bingeing so far and I think it's very close to the book which I read a few years ago. Lennie James looks and dresses just like Barrington in my mind.

EachandEveryone · 22/10/2024 08:37

He’s very dapper and old school I love him. Best not talk about the end then.

When does the real time final episode air @CaptainMyCaptain ? Think some of us on here are eager to discuss the ending/episodes with spoilers.

I've read the book so spoilers don't bother me personally. Not sure when the final episode is on.

Lulubellamozarella · 24/10/2024 19:20

Just started watching this thanks to seeing this thread. I have 2 episodes left to watch and I almost don't want to watch them because it will mean I have finished it and I don't want it to be over. 😂I am absolutely loving it!!!!!! I think its one of the most awesome drama's I have watched in ages with some very powerful messages. I have cried a few times so far. Will finish it tomorrow.

RedWinePoliticsAndHair · 25/10/2024 23:06

Just binged this all over four hours from my sick bed. A genuinely brilliant bit of telly. Why hasn't there been more buzz about it?

EachandEveryone · 25/10/2024 23:44

I dont know but ive just seen something come up on my facebook absolutely slagging itsaying it should never have been shown during shown during black awareness week as it shouldnt be encouraged in the commnity.what a shame people still feel like that in this day and age. I dont know why its not being shouted about. I loved it. My gay friends in their 60’s loved it and said there were many men like him in London when they lived the livein London in the 80’s. I would love to talk about the ending as I dont think’ that was the ideal place to take him to celebrate. Far too “woke” for a man of his generation with his views and my friends all agreed. I wont say any more.
