Does any one else watch The Block? (Australina reno/reality trash)

Just that really. It is pure trash and has evolved over the years to become less about renovation and more high drama/reality. I seem to remember watching an early series years ago when I has Sky on one of the home channels, and then Prime had a few series but nothing recent. I have recently discovered SHTV and I am watching the latest one in real time. It is pure product placement, very questionable design and contestants that in the main are pretty unlikable but I am hooked! It fills my need for rubbish for an hour at the end of the day. The ongoing narrative of the bloke gets on the tools whilst the little lady goes shopping for furniture seems very dated, especially in series 20.

Yes! I’m probably the only person in the whole of the UK, apart from you, who watched the Block. I got completely obsessed by it and binge watched about 30 series of it back to back. And then I suddenly grew tired of it, I think they were doing houses out in the countryside, and I suddenly wasn’t into it any more.

I was supposed to be renovating my own house at the time.

It is SO sexist, and really repetitive, but strangely addictive too.

I loved the early episodes but then it got padded out too much to no longer hold my interest.

Flossiecotton · 07/10/2024 22:47

I love it. It’s the only renovation show I watch

@Tradiesonthetools, I remember the Countryside one. Iwas shown on a random Freeview channel here. I binged it and suddenly gave up really near the end when I realised I just did not care. It is incredibly sexist, as well as lots of other questionable things. It feels like the 1980s sometimes (including some of the design). I have just started watching again after a break and finding a way to view the latest series for free. It makes the furore over the alleged Strictly bullying look like a minor squabble. It is a bit of a 'love to hate' watch.

@Flossiecotton are you watching the latest one on Philip Island? I am addicted, despite not liking the majority of the contestents, obvious editing to create drama, consistent product placement and pretty poor styling. Oh, and the lack of any real renovation 😉

@WallaceinAnderland- I totally get that. I lost interest for a good few years. The latest series is no way of the calibre of the early ones, but I after a longish break I have a place in my evenings for this level of trash. It maybe helps I am watching in real-time rather than binging episodes on a streaming network (although there are a few series on SHTV I have not seen if there is a gap in my life). They are still obsessed with marble and pretending the flat pack homes (furnished by the sponsors who I think are the Australian equivalent of DHS and Magnet) are 'high end'.

I am guessing the network that produces it is more ITV/five than the BBC equivelent. At least watching overseas I avoid the commercial breaks.....

No but I love your title and can’t believe that Australina hasn’t come up on a baby name thread !

Sorry I have completely the wrong show. I’m watching Rock the Block. I will give the block ago, what channel is it on

It’s on Prime

wandawaves · 08/10/2024 11:21

Yeah it's very much about the drama these days. Not much actual building going on by the teams themselves, just buying vases and artwork.

Prime has lots of series but not the most recent ones. I was recommended the SHTV website (southernhemitv) and this has all the series including the one airing in Australia at the moment. It also has a lot of other Australian TV reality shows like the Amazing Race available for free (no adverts)!
