Witchy type series/films

I've just finished watching a discovery of witches and absolutely loved it. Can anybody recommend a good series or movie with a similar/witchy vibe?

I've always been obsessed with anything witchy, when I was a kid it was bewitched, Sabrina the teenage witch, then as I got older it was onto charmed, the craft, practical magic.

Now I'm in my forties and unless I rewatch a discovery of witches for the Third time I've run out of entertainment to scratch my witchy/magical itch.

have you seen kingdom hospital great supernatural series

pheonixrebirth · 28/08/2024 23:59

I haven't even heard of it?! I will definitely try to look it up. Thank you so much.😊
Big lover of all things supernatural even if I am a wimp with the horror type genre.

I saw the title and came on to say Discovery of Witches ha! No more TV recommendations I'm afraid but the Discovery of witches books are a treat and there's a new one recently out.

Bell, Book and Candle
Blair Witch Project
Hocus Pocus
The Witch
The Love Witch
Witches of Eastwick
The Craft
Suspiria (the original)
Practical Magic

American Horror Story has a series on witches.

Violetandgreen · 29/08/2024 00:25

Mayfair Witches on BBC iplayer.

spikeandbuffy24 · 29/08/2024 01:07

All on Netflix, not all witch specific but they scratch the itch!

Fate the winx saga (I loved this, like a cross between Buffy, Harry Potter)
Shadow hunters
Locke and key
Chilling adventures of Sabrina

theduchessofspork · 29/08/2024 01:35

Sleepy Hollow (it’s better than Edward scissor hands oh yes it is)

Merlin - more wizard than witch but still

The Power - not exactly witches but girls w supernatural power

The Love Witch. It is mental.

Blair witch project. It was a moment. Possibly you had to be there.

The Conjuring - a bit of witch, a bit of ghost

Rosemary’s Baby. A bit of a stretch maybe but a must watch.

In the earth - Batshit but good, witch adjacent rather than pure witchiness. Made during lockdown I think.

midsommar, it’s got bits of witchcraft type action, and it’s very good

fun Witchery
Nineties / Noughties charm - Charmed, Sabrina the teenage witch

  • and back to the 60s for Bewitched, I love Bewitched!
I married a witch -40s screwball comedy.

If you’re willing to branch out to books (witcherature…)

Weird Sister by Kate Pullinger - witches revenge in the fens - v atmospheric

Her Majesties royal coven - 21st century YA fun mash up

Practical magic - light gothic family saga in Massachusetts (the movie isn’t great)

witch persecution novels
The Manningtree Witches - women of an Essex village on trial in the 1600s - v evocative of claustrophobic village life

The mercies - 18th century witch-hunt in Scandinavia -.based on a true story I think

The last witch in Scotland - bit more of a romp

I recently watched one called Sanctuary, that is set in modern day England.

There's also Witches of East End and a new one called Domino Day but I haven't watched that yet so not sure how good it is

pheonixrebirth · 29/08/2024 19:58

@Violetandgreen I have watched this and I'm just hoping there is a second season, I need to know what happens with her and the baby?

@cupcaske123 I'd completely forgotten about witches of east wick, I've only ever seen the odd scene! Thank you for the reminder.👍

@spikeandbuffy24 I've got Netflix so I will definitely try to work my way through that list! ☺️

@theduchessofspork Wow! You are the queen of witchy entertainment! Thank you so much for your suggestions and for witcherature list also. I think now that the nights are drawing in a good witchy novel might be in order.👌

Supernatural - amazing series all about supernatural stuff including witchcraft/witches

Agatha All Along - coming soon to Disney+ will be about witches; you may want to watch WandaVision first to understand the backstory

If you liked Sabrina, you could try Wednesday

The Witcher - has magical elements etc

The Sandman

Cursed

Zombella · 31/08/2024 22:09

Fort Salem is an excellent American series based on the idea of witches being real and existing openly in present day. It's free to watch on BBC iPlayer. There's three seasons and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 31/08/2024 22:17

Would also recommend the books of Discovery of Witches much better than the TV show. Books wise have you explored the world of Sarah J Maas - not witches but will scratch a similar itch.

Frosty1000 · 31/08/2024 22:19

The worst witch on iPlayer/netflix 😆😆

Singleandproud · 31/08/2024 22:21

The Discovery of Witches show was very disappointing compared to the trilogy, the books are truly fantastic and the original trilogy is now five books.

Mayfair Witches on BBC
Sleep Hollow series on Disney
Another one on BBc was set in America but the witches were a military arm working for the govt, was very original but cannot for the life of me remember the name.
Wednesday on Netflix
True Blood on Now TV is more vampires and werewolves but plenty of supernatural element and has the best theme tune of any TV show

Snicksnacksnora · 31/08/2024 22:29

Omg vampire diaries!! There's lots of supernatural including witches!! It's so good x

Talisin · 31/08/2024 23:11

The recent-ish reboot of Charmed was quite fun, if you didn’t catch it. Grimm was great (although shapeshifters rather than witches). Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is an absolute hoot.

QuacketyQuack · 31/08/2024 23:23

Salem on Disney +
Vampire Diaries
Both brilliant!

Edited

Manon is an Iron Tooth witch in Throne of Glass, no spoilers, but she's my favourite character

TabbyBeast · 02/09/2024 18:40

Another vote here for Mayfair Witches on iPlayer.

Half Bad; The Devil and his Bastard Son on Netflix was surprisingly good.

PeachyKeane · 02/09/2024 18:46

The Wheel of Time has incredible women in called Aes Sedai. I really really want to be one. They have incredible powers.

You get a male bound to you to look after you called a Warder.

Also there are witches in The Witcher. That's a great watch for many reasons.
