I just watched this and I am just so shocked that this kind of thing could have been allowed to happen.

I mean, I'm not naive, I know that there are a huge number of untoward things going on but this, in New York, in the 80's.

Did anyone else watch it?

It’s quite old now so lots of people will have seen it.

It’s a shocking watch and not at all what you expect!

GuessingGownaGoGo · 25/08/2024 12:50

Isn't it just.

It all seemed so exciting to begin with, triplets finding each other - yay.

I just can't see how the scientists got away with it - especially with so many people affected. Why are they still allowed to withhold the findings???

Yes it is 6 years old now - surprised I'd never heard about it before from friends etc

GDPR for why findings closed.
Loved this when I saw it.
It ended up being a huge wormhole for me at the time (nature versus nurture, whether good parenting can "protect" you from genetics, depressive disposition etc).
There was also a thread on here. Hang on. I'll see if I can find it.

I was mind blown when I watched it and realised what had been done to those men. And the fact that they can't ever access the records is appalling.

‘Three Identical Strangers’: Five things you may not know | CNN
Ahh don't pull me back in. I have things to do Grin
There was redacted access but not put into the film.
I am curious as to what "conclusions" could be reached though.
The birth mother was thought to have some mental health issues?
I'm sure there's research that talks about propensity to alcoholism being hereditary.
If genetic influence is high, do we move to behaviours we're not conscious of?
Can you fight nature?

Eddy - middle class environment/strict parenting style
Bobby - wealthy/UMC environment/devoted but busy
David - blue collar/LMC environment/warm parenting style (but dad passed)

Eddy - manic depressive
Bobby - hyper aggressive/poor impulse control?
David - had also been in psych ward

Bobby left the business/felt pushed out
Eddy felt betrayed by Bobby

Eddy - charm but also anger/darkness
Bobby - accused of being involved in a murder but claimed peer pressure
David - similar to Eddy

Does wealth protect you from adversity?
Does warm parenting protect you from genetics?
How much free will do we have?

Five things you may not know about ‘Three Identical Strangers’ | CNN

“Three Identical Strangers” tells an astonishing story, and the saga is even bigger than what’s seen on screen.

Thank you for the links @BehindTheSequinsandStilettos !

I'm going to delve into this properly now, read the thread, find out what the more recent revelations are - there must be some!

I'm interested in this two fold:

  1. how was this 'research' able to go ahead, how much more 'research' was there in the US, was anything similar done in England?
  2. the similarities in preferences due to genetics, yet the differences in ability to cope with life's stresses due to upbringing/support networks. What 'weight' do each of these things have in life outcomes?

It's all fascinating, yet tragic and horrific for those involved.
