Hi all

Has anyone else thought about cancelling their TV licence?

I'm so sick of the BBC - particularly the Strictly and Huw Edwards rubbish

Should I decide to cancel, I can't watch ANY live TV (no biggie for me) and I can't watch ANY BBC iplayer (a bit more challenging but not hugely so)

I pay £13.25 a month atm, so not loads of money, but it'd be helpful to have it back !

Any thoughts?

I feel the same.

I barely watch BBC and could easily cut out the bits I do.

I don't watch live anyway.

I do listen to radio 4 in the car though.

The cost is ridiculous to be honest.

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 07:52

I think you need to pay for what you watch, if you don't watch, cancel, though surprised you only pay £13.25, I pay £15

Bestyearever2024 · 05/08/2024 07:54

Yes, I checked about radio as I too listen to R4.....and that's allowed without a licence

The cost IS crazy isn't it?

I was also reading on Twitter about the BBC supporting Paula Radcliffe after SHE made positive statements about the Dutch paedophile rapist

I dont want to be paying for this!

I stopped paying 10+ years ago, BBC covered up Jimmy Savil.

DonnaWinter · 05/08/2024 07:58

I pay £41 per quarter, I always forget about it and get the rage when the direct debit comes off, coincidentally it was taken the same day as I found out about Huw Edwards getting paid nearly half a million whilst on suspension. I really want to cancel the direct debit, the bbc is a load of shite, particularly the news, I don’t trust that bloated, anachronistic corporation as far as I can throw it.

Yes. Me too. I pay by DD and I think its usually reviewed in June, but it's still £13.25 atm

I've definitely found my tribe here! 🥳🥳

I think I'm going to fill out the form and cancel my DD

At least it'll help my blood pressure 🤣

Oh yes! Disgusting 🫣 🤢

I've cancelled it before, but since they changed the rules about bbc iplayer I've decided to keep it because my daughter likes quite a few of the shows like Jojo and Grangran

I do think it's a rip off though when I'm paying £5pm for Netflix and I watch that far more

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/08/2024 08:45

Also pay £13.25 but I use iPlayer a lot

But rarely watch live tv

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 08:52

Ah, it's probably when your licence renews, mine renewed in March or April, probably when it had just gone up, so £15 is the renewal price.

roughride24 · 05/08/2024 09:04

Just a word of warning, if anyone comes round to visit from licensing, don't let them in.

To make a long story short, I now have to go to court 😭

Bestyearever2024 · 05/08/2024 11:05

Oh no! Court? That's awful 😖

I am happy to pay.
It's worth it for cbeebies and CBBC and anything with David Attenborough.
I like dramas like Call the Midwife.
My husband watches the sports.
I don't watch the news or any of the "entertainment" stuff like Strictly but I know others like them.
As the license also covers "live" TV it's needed for other sporting events on ITV that my husband watches. I like Channel 4 too which I do actually like to watch "live" once in a while.

Only about the eleventy thousand posters who've started posts asking the same thing, but as it's been about 48 hours since the last one maybe there's something new to say 😂😂😂

GenreHumain · 05/08/2024 11:18

I cancelled it for a couple of years and only renewed it because I wanted to help fund the radio stations that are the backdrop to my life. Not that you have to pay for BBC radio, unless you want to stream it but that is how it’s funded.

Bestyearever2024 · 05/08/2024 11:05

Oh no! Court? That's awful 😖

Yep, I had an issue with my direct debit after paying it for years. They came and I realised and set it back up there and then with the guy. They then sent court papers as I'd not paid enough back in 3 months. They basically set me up to fail. The papers say in unnecessarily bold writing that I'm CHARGED WITH A CRIMINAL OFFENCE.

I also stupidly filled in the court papers online without calling them first. So now I'm having to go to court, first thing in the morning in a different city entirely to plead my case as I didn't show financial hardship (which I do have) and pleaded not guilty (which apparently I shouldn't have).

What a massive shit show this is.

So yeah. Don't let them in if they come knocking. Learn from my potentially very expensive mistake

hollysmumma · 05/08/2024 12:19

I cancelled mine a while ago, simple to do, and I don't miss live tv or the BBC

treedwell · 05/08/2024 12:21

I haven’t had one for quite a few years now, I don’t miss it and just alternate between various streaming services for the most part.

Honestly, I'm so sorry. I did a quick search to see if there was a thread about the topic.....couldn't see one, so carried on

I wish there were a flag when we try to post with a title similar to one recently posted, cos I feel such an idiot now 😕

@roughride24 , I'm really sorry that you're going through this. And thank you so much for the heads up 💙
