Olympics and bbc rights

Really noticing this morning how limited the BBC coverage is with them now only being able to broadcast 2 sports live.

Was feeling a bit sad as my TV doesn't support the Discovery+ app but found out that its a £3.99 add on in Prime this morning and signed up in Prime and I've got everything and it's awesome.

This isn't an ad - just an info post as I had no idea you could watch Discovery + through your Prime account and I don't resent paying £4 to watch the Olympics and appreciate others might want to too!

Thanks for this.

I was so disappointed with the choice on offer yesterday. I love the Olympics for the sports you don't usually get to see so being offered football and tennis was frustrating.

IwantToRetire · 28/07/2024 17:08

I hadn't realised that was what had happened. So explains why I cant find anything when I search schedules.

So thanks to OP's post have found this article that explains different ways to get Discovery Plus, including a 7 Day free trial (may sign up for all the finals!) and an offer of a cheap year's package as part of covering the Olympics.

Glad it helped - I think a lot of people are missing out as the BBC aren't being very upfront about the fact that they really can't show much anymore so people dont realise they are missing so many events. The coverage today on Discovery+ and BBC was chalk and cheese.

I think the BBC lack of coverage was less noticeable with Tokyo because of the time difference so we were missing a lot anyway.

That must be why I have no memory of them!

JellyBabyToManual · 29/07/2024 00:07

Thank you! Just settling down to some gymnastics which I failed to catch all day 🤬

BobnLen · 29/07/2024 06:55

I think DH watches on Eurosport on Sky, is that the same as Discovery+

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 29/07/2024 07:04

Totally agree. Just wanted to add that if you are a SkyPlus customer it's included in your package. I didn't know this until I saw someone mention it on here.

IwantToRetire · 29/07/2024 16:30

Have just seen that Amazon Prime are offering 30 days free trial period.

So does that mean as OP said that could watch the Olympics via that?

A free month is better than a free week!

But not familiar with Amazon Prime.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 29/07/2024 22:18

Discovery isn't included in Amazon prime so it's an addition 3.99 for a month on top of the prime subscription.

I've added a Discovery plus subscription on my prime account but have already cancelled it so it won't auto-renew at the end of August.

NaaameChanger · 29/07/2024 22:26

Watched a bit of the Discovery +. I usually like gymnastics but I don’t know much about it so need at least some commentary so feels a bit odd literally just watching the sport. Or am I watching the wrong thing - I was on catch up.

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 29/07/2024 22:54

We watched the women's gymnastics qualifiers yesterday and there was commentary. Haven't managed to watch any today

Eurosport is Discovery but you don’t get all the streams you need Discovery + for that .

Smidge001 · 29/07/2024 23:25

We watch on eurosport too.

curlyrebel · 29/07/2024 23:41

Thanks @Bathymamouth. Really disappointed with the BBC coverage

wonderstuff · 29/07/2024 23:44

We were able to add Discovery + for free with Sky package yesterday, really good.

JenniferandJuniper · 30/07/2024 03:41

Do you know if a smart TV is needed to add Discovery + ?
I'm just not familiar with all this. I have basic Virgin with sky sports added on so get euro sports and TNT. Would love to see all the Olympic sports and am frustrated with the BBC coverage.

Willmafrockfit · 30/07/2024 05:18

it is annoying how much is being missed by bbc

Bathymamouth · 30/07/2024 06:41

I'm looking forward to the womens gymnastic team final tonight at 5.15 - and the fact i can watch the whole thing. You definitely get commentary on Discovery- I need it too.

Zampa · 30/07/2024 06:51

The BBC lost control of the rights to the Olympics after they were sold to Discovery for £920 million in 2015.

The BBC then agreed a deal with Discovery to sub-license the rights but that only allows two live events to be shown simultaneously.

Blame the IOC not the BBC!

It’s not being missed, they don’t have the rights as they were sold for millions to Discovery so the BBC can’t broadcast content they don’t own.

Maybe one for everyone to remember if they talk about an inflation based increase in the future, because licence fee payments have been capped by the previous government for so long the BBC currently is running at a massive deficit and can’t afford to show some of the content people would like to see.

They’re hardly going to point viewers to an alternative channel during the coverage they are able to broadcast.

sunburnandsangria · 30/07/2024 07:09

I'm really enjoying the Eurosport coverage - especially the presenters in the 'studio' - Bonjour Paris and Bonsoir Paris (the morning and evening shows) are my new favourite thing. Sunshine or sunset on the terrace with all of Paris in the background - so feel good! (I only happened upon the Eurosport coverage by accident!)
Makes the BBC studio stuff look very wooden and outdated.

louderthan · 30/07/2024 08:43

I signed up for discovery+ to watch the French Open, it's really easy to use!
