A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I understood what you were trying to say @peanutcookie . As the mother of teens I thank you for your efforts with underprepared teens. Enjoy your kdrama off ramp into the weekend. 🍻

They are lovely actually but I have a core group who are difficult to manage at the moment and it put me into a bad mood yesterday. Anyway I didn't get a chance to watch more than 20 minutes of love in contract but hopefully will have much more time this weekend. As its my last free weekend until the end of January (thank you mocks and y10 and y12 assessments) I'm hoping for quite a lazy one

boatyardblues · 30/11/2024 16:43

The Trunk was a good 9 for me. It was great to see Gong Woo in a leading role & with an appropriately aged FL for a change. 😄

Did you binge the whole thing?

boatyardblues · 30/11/2024 19:25

Yep. I watched eps 1-6 and half of ep 7 yesterday. Not the day I had planned and I stayed up until 1am so I’m knackered today. It was gripping and twisty so it hooked my interest.

OP posts:
AmVa · 30/11/2024 19:27

I can't wait to start the Trunk. I've just finished the book it is based on so will be interesting to see how they've translated it to TV.

Not had a lot of time recently for drama watching, but finally finished Mr Plankton the other night which I thoroughly enjoyed.

boatyardblues · 30/11/2024 19:45

I’ll be going back to Mr Plankton tomorrow.

I watched ep 3 of When The Phone Rings & think it’s in danger of collapsing under the weight of all the improbable plotting. YYS started really well in angry mode but could slide back to mama’s boy territory if he’s not careful.

OP posts:
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 30/11/2024 22:06

When the Phone Rings is MASSIVE CRAIC. I love the absolute LUDICROUSNESS of it <rubs hands in glee>

boatyardblues · 30/11/2024 22:29

I take it all back. Episode 4 was great. Hard agree on the ludicrousness, but the kind you can revel in. It was good to see YYS veer back to simmering tsundere in ep 4.

I'm being lured back into K dramas with these new shows! I just started Mr Plankton today and I'm loving it so far.

I'm all caught up with Love Village too, it's not as good as the first series but I'm still enjoying it a lot 😍

Oooh Rowdy strong start 🤩 thank you!

Saram13 · 01/12/2024 08:14

Finished Family By Choice yesterday. Will really really miss it. Would have scored it a 8.5 as found the main romance story slightly wishy-washy (also preferred second couple). But the Choi Moo-sung content, especially in the last episode, was 😁😁😁, so that's bumped it up to a strong 9 🤩

Have a few more episodes to go in Mr Plankton. So far, I can't fault it. It's prompted me to decide that It's Okay to Not Be Okay will be my next classic - same writer and partly same cast. I'm also slowly working through and loving Hospital Playlist.

Rowdy I agree with what you say about Love Village.

Once MrP's rounded off I'll start on When the Phone Rings and The Trunk.

TheLoupGarou · 01/12/2024 08:23

It's the most wonderful time of the year 🎶

Agree about Rowdy’s strong start and the pressie pic showcases his handles ears beautifully. 😄

Saram - I would watch The Trunk before starting When The Phone Rings. It’s already up in full, only 8 episodes and an absolute cracker.

Hello, felicitations of the oppa season to all!

I've not posted for ages (despite keeping up with the thread) but the Advent oppas draw me back without fail 🤣

I've watched quite a bit this year, although some of the biggies like LR are not on my platforms. Too many to mention, but I've just finished My Dearest and I am Not a Robot and have just started W - Two Worlds Apart. DH and I have also been down a few Chinese rabbit holes, including The Double, Who Rules the World and we've just started Kill Me, Love Me.

As a parent of a Y10, another thanks to @peanutcookie et al for their tireless work with teens. My Y2s are already Christmas concert fuelled balls of over-excitement (with 3 weeks still to go 🙈) but I wouldn't swap them for teens under any circumstances!

Thanks @PunksVersusBrats having spent a few years as a primary TA I can safely say I do not have the energy to be a primary teacher, especially for KS1! I did in fact tell my Y11s on Friday that I'd get more sense out of Y3s 🙃

I've given up on Love in Contract. I gave it 3 episodes and just too boring. Plus how was she married to the judge for 5 years whilst doing all those other marriages? Anyway, I've moved onto My ID is Gangnam Beauty so hoping for better things

Also, I'm not sure I've ever watched anything with Taecyon. Any recommendations?

peanutcookie · 01/12/2024 16:54

I've just googled and turns out I have, in Vincenzo. I didn't particularly enjoy that show, the comedy was just off

mrsfeatherbottom · 01/12/2024 16:59

Interesting that you gave up on Love in Contract, @peanutcookie as after you mentioned it and it showed up on my Netflix, I checked the spreadsheet and saw it for mostly 5s and decided to give it a miss.

TheLoupGarou · 01/12/2024 17:45

I found Love In Contract really boring- I only liked the second male lead - and ended up dropping it eventually i think....

I think i prefer real-life Taecyeon to any of his dramas if I'm honest 🤣 I'm struggling to think of one I'd actually truly recommend 🙈

TheLoupGarou · 01/12/2024 17:47

Oh! Dream High 🤣 forgot that one. Watch at your own risk - it's oldskool (2011 or so)

I also liked Bring it on Ghost! (2016) but again, not sure if I can really say it's good - i just like it 🤩

Rowdythree · 01/12/2024 19:12

I enjoyed Save Me that he was in, I'm a sucker for any plot involving a cult though 😁
