A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Just popped into Waterstones and got these two books on offer. Had seen them recommended so they were on my list. Doing quite a lot of reading at the minute!

I'm currently reading Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop, only just started though so haven't got very far. Let me know your thoughts, I like what I've read. It's for bookclub and the others aren't keen on it

peanutcookie · 25/11/2024 23:04

I loved the cover of the department store one, I picked it up and put it down a few times. Have you read If I Had Your Face? Very interesting insight into the role of beauty in South Korean culture. I've also got a book about an octopus, I don't remember the name but the blurb made me think it could be a quirky kdrama so bought it. All my kdrama viewing is leaving me with little time to read so don't know when I'll get to it

Saram13 · 26/11/2024 11:33

@JinBhoot 👋🙂

@mrsfeatherbottom I thought Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop wasn't going to be my thing (too wishy-washy and a bit whinge-y, like the I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki series, which I really didn't like at all). But I stuck with it and ended up really enjoying it. So perhaps it will grow on peanut's bookclub too.

Dallergut Dream Department Store is my favourite Korean novel to date. The sequel, Return to the Dallergut Dream Department Store, has just been published and is on my reading pile. The same author/translator team have another book due out in summer 2025.

@peanutcookie I haven't read that book, but really enjoyed Elise Hu's Flawless (non-fiction, on the same subject).

mrsfeatherbottom · 26/11/2024 11:44

I'm really looking forward to reading both. Other than Pachinko, I haven't read any Korean literature.

Saram13 · 26/11/2024 11:52

@Andante57 and @boatyardblues I agree that there have been some turkeys this year, plus frustrating series that should have been better than they were (Marry My Husband being the most frustrating in that respect, and The Frog, which had all the style, promise and acting talent but kind of petered out).

However, in the last month or so there have been some absolutely cracking series, including three contenders for drama of the year (Family By Choice on Viki, Jeongnyeon - The Star is Born on Disney+ and Mr Plankton on Netflix). Just finished A Virtuous Business too, and that was also really good. Fabulous 80s detail, ensemble cast (but strangely uncharismatic FL), score and sound effects 😁🙌 Will start When the Phone Rings (Yoo Yeon-seok) later this week, want to check out Lee Min-ki's Face Me, and am looking forward to both The Trunk (Gong Yoo) and Light Shop (Um Tae-goo).

mrsfeatherbottom · 26/11/2024 12:04

I've enjoyed loads of the 2024 dramas too - maybe I'm easily pleased! 😁

Did anyone watch the first episode of When the Phone Rings? There's something that happened in it that's bugging me that I need to question/rant about/discuss!!

Andante57 · 26/11/2024 12:24

Saram that sounds very encouraging. We’ll start Mr Plankton when we’ve finished Culinary Class Wars.

MigsandTiggs · 26/11/2024 12:36

Feather, I think quite a few of us are watching WTPR, so go ahead and ask/rant.

boatyardblues · 26/11/2024 13:42

Yeah I’n up to date with WTPR too. Hit us up MrsF!

OP posts:
mrsfeatherbottom · 26/11/2024 13:53

So, two things about going to an event as an interpreter - surely you need someone who speaks, otherwise you can sign what one person is saying but can't then translate what the reply is to the original speaker ...? I can see how her job as a sign language person on TV would work but not at an event.

Also, I'm no expert but I know that British, Irish and American sign language is all completely different so I find it hard to believe the the English Ambassador's wife would understand Korean sign language, no?

boatyardblues · 26/11/2024 14:02

I can’t disagree with either of those points MrsF, definite logic fail in that scene. I was too distracted by the weird buffet spread and bright blue cocktails. 😂

OP posts:
mrsfeatherbottom · 26/11/2024 14:07

I was impressed at how quickly he identified the bruschetta and truffles!

MigsandTiggs · 26/11/2024 14:40

@mrsfeatherbottom One of my dc's friends is a sign language interpreter and she was recently in South Korea for a conference, so one presumes that there are enough areas of commonality in the sign language of different countries for communication, as she doesn't speak Korean or any foreign languages.

There is also something called "International Sign Language", which someone like the ambassador's wife would probably be expected to know. A slightly similar situation would be like when the employer pays for expat spouses' foreign language lessons to ease settlement into new countries.

I wasn't too bothered by the mute interpreter, but can see your point now. Guess they could chat to each other?

Gasping for one of the enticing blue Curaçao cocktails now😋

MigsandTiggs · 26/11/2024 14:46

Actually there was another interpreter present, who spoke English.

Me too! I had my fingers crossed that they would add an extra date as the Friday is my youngests last day of primary. 3 tickets acquired for Saturday. Don’t think my partner is thrilled about the amount we’ve spent on concerts this year though. 🫣
