A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Re Korea. I had bought boxes of Terry's orange chocolate as a quintessentially British gift.

Migs, Terry’s chocolate Orange is a brilliant idea. As you say, quintessentially British and also delicious. I shall definitely take some of those as presents next year.

Something i love about kdrama land - first episode of Mr Plankton there is a blink and you'll miss it reference to My Sweet Mobster in the wedding congratulations videos. They do Easter Eggs very well

I saw that!!

peanutcookie · 11/11/2024 14:02

I'm going the London Korean Film festival this evening with some work chingus. I think the film is called the Girl at the Door. There will be a presentation by a professor from KCL first. I hope I don't fall asleep. I have a terrible habit of dozing off at cinema/theatre and I don't want to be snoring at my colleagues!

polkettle · 12/11/2024 09:30

I saw that at its first showing at the start of the festival Peanut. Love Bae Doona and thought it was a great, if unsettling, watch. A counter balance to the romanticising of small town Korea in dramas...
Have also been to see It's Okay! which was much cosier, with a very sweet cameo turn by SSK, Mr Gu himself. Recommended for those with teenage daughters as a comfort popcorn movie. The director did a Q and A and was delightful. Also delightful was her proud eomma sat just behind me, filming her and beaming.
Have tickets for Love in the Big City tomorrow but wish I'd shifted my bum to see even more really.

mrsfeatherbottom · 12/11/2024 12:50

The film festival sounds great.

I'm really enjoying Mr Plankton and it's great that they just released all the episodes in one go so no waiting for weeks!

Also, delighted to see Nico from Grey's Anatomy in it although I knew I recognised him, had to look it up to see where I knew him from.

Well clearly we were not paying attention when booking as we all thought we had booked a comfort popcorn film so "uncomfortable" was an understatement. As teachers we were all concerned with safeguarding both of the character and the actress who played her. Will look to see if I can watch It's Okay! On any other platform

polkettle · 12/11/2024 19:38

Ha. I agree that the festival brochure did not really reflect the film content and tone! It's Okay! would definitely have been a better choice for a night off.

peanutcookie · 12/11/2024 22:32

I'm all caught up with Family By Choice
Looking forward to the kids being adult . Though they are still mainly behaving in the same way as when they were teens so far

boatyardblues · 13/11/2024 07:37

I want to say that the outcome hinted at by Sunday’s episode of A Virtuous Business would make me very happy. I’ll say no kore though, because some of you are still catching up.

I am still catching up! Became obsessed with Mr Plankton within the first 15 mins so working my way through that at the moment. Sadly a very busy week with extra in office days this week (and next week...) so watching slowly

I’m catching up on Family by Choice and it’s bugging me immensely that Kim San Ha has left his car parked in the access road to the apartments in ep 11 when it is flanked by empty parking bays. 😖 There are so many empty bays they could have just coasted in, no need to disrupt the flow of the scene. Why? Make it make sense.

💯

He did the same at the bakery in the last episode. Just abandoned his car in front of the front door.

I'm decidedly less uninterested in these post 2013 episodes so far but will shake myself.

mrsfeatherbottom · 14/11/2024 22:24

I'm loving the grown up Dal - she's the only one who seems to have changed in the 10 years.

I agree MrsF. She's definitely one of the most likeable, evolved characters. I hope she gets a satisfactory ending.

I finished Mr Plankton (I highly recommend unemployment if you want to up your kdrama watching).

Definitely worth a watch. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll be glad Woo Do-Hwan clearly had it in his contract that each episode had to have at least one shirtless scene.

boatyardblues · 15/11/2024 17:35

Shirtless WDH gives great fan service. Thanks for the recommendation.

How’s the jobhunting going MrsF?

Not great! I'm kind of awkward, though as I need part time to fit in with school run (ASD DD can't cope with the bus and the school is 10 miles away) but also 100% WFH because of my physical disability. Have applied for a few but only heard back from one place and yet to hear if I have an interview. Fingers crossed.
