A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I’ve just watched Juror 8 on Olga’s. It’s 12 Angry Men K-style. Astonishing to think SK only introduced jury trials in 2008. Park Hyung Sik plays Henry Fonda’s doubtful juror role, who was also juror 8 in the original film. It was good and I enjoyed it. Perfect start to a slow Saturday.

Lovely episode of Love Next Door, though I was a bit Hmm at how coherent very, very drunk Choiseung was and how cleanly those lines tumbled out of JHI’s mouth. I don’t know any messy drunk IRL that would be able to pull that off.

Does anyone know where that temple really is? Googling Gajeongsan (as per subtitles) yields a big fat nada.

< Spoiler alert > True Beauty webtoon/drama.

I've finished the webtoon and it's really good, I enjoyed it more than I expected. If you're team Seo-jun, though, DO NOT read this webtoon. Parts of his storyline are so heartbreaking 💔. Having actually dated Jugyeong briefly in the webtoon it's even harder on Seo-jun when Jugyeong and Suho finally get together. He eventually gets a happy ending of sorts but it's not very satisfying. I haven't read the side stories yet, though, so....

Anyway, although there are some small changes and bits missed out, overall the show captures the essence of the webtoon pretty well and it is, indeed, a win for team Suho🏆

Having just started NGNL I've high hopes that it will be suitable viewing for a dull Sunday morning.

I need to stop as much K-Vlog and K-Film viewing and succumb into drama escapism as looking at the 2024 spreadsheet there is a lot to catch up on!

boatyardblues · 22/09/2024 12:05

I want to big up David Tizzard’s latest Korea Deconstructed podcast with pansori scholar Dr Jocelyn Clark. It’s about pansori but so much more too. I learned so much, best 1h40mins of my recent pod-listening. I really appreciate all the trills and interest in Leenalchi’s music now. Hard recommend. 👌

I’m envious that you have a clear run with a good stash of episodes banked up. It’s a lot of fun and the weekly drip-feed is frustrating.

Mo-Eum in Love Next Door is shaping up to be one of my favourite supporting kdrama characters of all time. She’s so open-hearted and playful, but also self-aware and sensible. I’m rooting for her, possibly even more than for Seok-Ryu and Choisseung, who both need to work on their communication skills.

Is bad communication not the main plot driver in every relationship in a kdrama?

This has probably been discussed before but as usual I’m behind the curve…..
we’re watching Made in Korea (we’ve got to episode 4) which is enjoyable though I feel sorry for those lads when confronted with Yoon Hee Jun’s robust views.
It’s also a bit unfair as Korean bands train for thousands and thousands of hours to get their dancing up to speed and Dear Alice have only had a few weeks.

MigsandTiggs · 23/09/2024 19:04

Made in Korea is certainly showing the difference in attitude/resilience/work ethic between Korean would be idols and the British versions. The boys' assessment of their progress was so inflated that I cringed for them. K-pop world is brutal.

The Judge from Hell (Apple tv) has made a strong start for me.
Black Out : Snow White must die has such a good and twisty plot that I now want to read the book on which it is based.
Apple tv's Korean content is getting so stronge that I fear I may have to wave goodbye to Olga's and take out yet another subscription!

mrsfeatherbottom · 24/09/2024 18:36

I can't believe there's only two more episodes of NLNG left!! (And the spin off, I suppose)

boatyardblues · 24/09/2024 19:01

It’s excellent. I can’t work out why she was so bothered by this week’s cliffhanger reveal. Is it the lack of disclosure?

I was transfixed by the self-parking car. It’s witchcraft! That’s the kind of PPL I can get behind. I feel informed. Yet another tasty Subway baguette, not so much.

OP posts:
mrsfeatherbottom · 24/09/2024 19:03

There was good PPL in LND too with the electric car you can connect a hairdryer to after a water fight!

My brother has a self parking car but says it only works if he wants to park in between two cars. It can't cope with an empty car park, apparently! (I guess you shouldn't need it in an empty car park, though)

boatyardblues · 24/09/2024 19:09

Really? That’s rubbish.

Agree about the hairdryer/electric car combo, though an electric car seems quite an outlay for rapid dry hair.

Na Ha-Yeon’s reaction to the fridge freezer catastrophe was very relatable. Bitter experience speaking.

OP posts:
mrsfeatherbottom · 24/09/2024 19:10

I also can't work why he kept it a secret (back to NLNG cliffhanger - not my brother and his fancy car!!)

MigsandTiggs · 25/09/2024 07:40

Re MrsF's brother's self parking car, it's because it measures the width between two objects to decide if the car would fit. It doesn't have to be two cars. Mine parked itself across several bays when I tried it in an empty car park.😆
