Dexter series. Female characters.

Just started Dexter. I'm at series 3 episode 3.

I've been meaning to watch it for ages but this is my first time watching it.

I'm struck by how poor the female characters are. Specifically the sister and girlfriend, but all female characters really. I don't think it's bad acting, it's poor script and character development.

Hope it gets better

Keep watching, it gets much better and you get more familiar with them as it goes on .I must rewatch this again soon

Gosh I loved the female characters in Dexter, especially the girlfriend and sis at the start! But I did watch it a long time ago! Don’t give it up yet.

Sorry @Pterodacty1 - I thought they were terrible at female characters right the way through! It’s one of my abiding memories of Dexter. Otherwise pretty good though. (Until the last season at least!)

Deborah is fabulous!

Her off Hustle is fairly annoying in Season 2. Stick with it OP, season 4 is ace.

Oddly enough I'm rewatching Dexter for the second time and am on the same episode. I don't think the female characters are so bad- Lila was awful (that 'British' accent, urgh), and Esme the stand in police chief- but I like Deborah, and La Guerta is pretty cool. Rita gets more ballsy and less annoying.
Some of the male characters are pretty awful/ without depth too if you examine them- especially the creepy forensics guy.

Dexter is such a great show, keep watching!

I dislike Deborah's constant swearing. I don't mind swearing at all but she curses all the time in every single sentence. Takes away its impact. It makes her look unintelligent.

MardyBra · 22/07/2024 17:03

Deborah’s swearing was supposed to be part of her edgy character. Especially as Americans swear less than Brits generally.

Lila is played by an English actress, the accent is her real one.

I liked Deb & La Guerta. I liked Dexter a lot, but it has terrible ending.

Interesting. She definitely sounds different as Lila than in her natural interviews to me, but maybe it's because she's trying to make the character Lila oddly breathy? Her normal voice doesn't grate on me but in Dexter it really puts my teeth on edge.

chattyness · 22/07/2024 19:01

I think Lila is meant to be annoying & that you're really not meant to like her because you kind of need to be in Dexter's corner even though he does what he does IYSWIM, I love the way Debs reacts to her too.

The police chief in the Dexter New Blood reboot is a fabulous female character.

MardyBra · 23/07/2024 05:35

Deborah goes unconvincingly weird much later on. Can’t really say why cos of spoilers.

I agree, it doesn't make sense to me what they did with her character
