I'd be so grateful for recommendations of series to watch, please!

I've enjoyed series like Spiral, Braquo, A French Village.

Candice Renoir is a lovely French police series. 8 series so far and the 9th available at the end of the month. More Midsomer Murders than Spiral. Gorgeous scenery and fabulous actors. Also Astrid: Murder in Paris. Astrid is on the autistic spectrum, working in police records and she helps the police with crime scenes. Lovely touching friendship blossoms between the 2 female leads.

Call my Agent on Netflix is really good.

OnlyFrench · 10/07/2024 05:47

Lupin, Le Plan Cul

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 10/07/2024 07:18

The Disappearance
The Forest
The perfect mother

All really good.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 10/07/2024 07:29

Lupin
call my agent

@Umanresources how gory is Astrid? I'm not keen on really graphic autopsy scenes etc. Is it like that?

Netcam · 10/07/2024 08:36

Following, I loved Spiral.

No. It's not very gory. I tried to watch Balthazar, but that was very explicit with the autopsies and I had to turn away. That meant I missed reading the subtitles so didn't know what was happening. My OH doesn't do gore either and he enjoyed Astrid.

Umanresources · 10/07/2024 09:44

The French Agency is not a police show, but it's about a family of estate agents who show absolutely gorgeous houses and apartments, mostly in France, but have been abroad in the later series. It's a reality show but doesn't have staged dramas like the US ones. It's a bit of light relief after the murders!

Family Business is good and D'argent et de sang is excellent!
We also enjoyed Tapie.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm going to look all of these up.

Another vote for Astrid.

@Umanresources and those brothers are just so....pretty! It's my guilty pleasure.

I do like the brothers, but feel a bit sad they want to work in other countries. I think my favourite is Valentin. I like how his wife listens to their chatter in French, but replies in English.

Another vote for Astrid and Call my Agent!

yesbutnobut · 12/07/2024 20:42

Call my Agent (i think it was called Dix Percent in France)

You4coffee · 12/07/2024 20:46

Another one for call my agent. Also enjoying fiasco. The hook up plan is very silly but good for improving my increasing my knowledge of french swearing.

lazymum99 · 13/07/2024 10:34

Just discovered The Wagner Method on channel 4 takes place in Strasbourg

PrincessOfPreschool · 13/07/2024 11:44

These look great. Thank you

Paris Police 1900

I loved Spiral but my favourite French show of all time is The Bureau, unfortunately it’s never been on any free streaming platforms and it isn’t as well known, it was recommended to me my French friends.

it’s available on Amazon prime but you have to pay for it.

if anyone is happy to use streaming platforms using a vpn, you can find it on hdtoday.to

Show description (the show is truly amazing)
Based on real accounts and inspired by contemporary events, this French spy thriller follows the daily lives and missions of members of the country's external security service -- France's equivalent of the CIA. It focuses on intelligence officer Guillaume Debailly, code named "Malotru," who is mysteriously recalled to Paris after spending six years under cover in Syria. As he tries to re-connect with his daughter, ex-wife and colleagues, Debailly risks everything by resuming contact with his married lover, Nadia, who might have secrets of her own that jeopardize the agent.

Terea · 14/07/2024 17:29

Just watched Truth on BBC iplayer, it’s a film but v good

Violetmarmalade · 15/07/2024 09:56

A second vote for The Bureau. Up there with Spiral as an engrossing, well-written and well-acted drama

TonTonMacoute · 16/07/2024 19:18

Another vote for Call My Agent, loved it.

I also really like The Wagner Method, which is very lighthearted and bonkers but done well enough to be enjoyable.

I also liked the Crimson Rivers series, which was totally bat shit, and quite gory but well done.

For grown up stuff the absolute best French series I have ever seen is Baron Noir, it's about presidential politics but it's so gripping. It was on Amazon Prime, 3 series.

These are mostly crime/thriller, some of the "Midsomer" variety:

Dix Pour Cent (the English version is just not as good)
Lupin
Astrid et Raphael
Police 1900 and 1905
Candice Renoir - agree its more Midsomer than Spiral but its an easy watch
Balthazar
Peur Sur Le Lac.
Hotel Beau Sejour.
Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie (fun French spin on Agatha Christie classics)
