I'm on my summer holidays from school & my son is at his camp all this week so I've been looking for things to watch instead of actually doing something productive so a Golden Girls meme popped up on FB yesterday & it sent me down a rabbit hole, talk about nostalgia AND even better it's actually made me laugh out loud a good few times too, does anyone else remember this? It was a staple in my auntie's growing up

Loved it, and I recorded almost every episode on videotape! I would wonder what it would be like to be that old and what I would be doing, and now I’m closer to Sophia’s age.

Are you going to watch it all week?

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 20:45

Oh man videotape, I'm sure we did too back then! Yeah I'll keep going if I can, they're all on Disney so why not, Dorothy's facial expressions alone are worth it & of course Blanche reminds me of my mother 😆😆

Don't even get me started on their ages, the "ladies" are not quite as old as I remember 🙈

Loved the Golden Girls, got my kids into it when they were younger, my son got CFS when he was 12 and missed a lot of school he watched the Golden Girls and Friends from start to finish a few times over

PatsyStonesBeehive · 08/07/2024 21:05

It's one of my comfort shows. If i'm sick or there's anything going on that stresses me out, I put it on for an instant pick me up.

In case you didn't know, all seasons are on Disney+ if you fancy a binge watch.

LeonoraFlorence · 08/07/2024 21:07

I have such fond memories watching it with my gran late at night on Sky channels, cuddled in her big bed.

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 21:10

Do youn know what @PatsyStonesBeehive that's exactly it, it's" a comfort watch"

@46mumof6 ah brilliant, perfect viewing as they're both short & sweet, I've been dipping in & out of Friends too recently, I was convinced ther's be a lot of eyerolling beacuse people keep saying it hasn't aged well & of course there's some questionable moments but honestly I'm really enjoying it all over again (not the Rachel & Joey stioryline though!) I swear streaming is a godsend if you have a sick child isn't it?

@LeonoraFlorence me too but in my auntie's house & with my cousins too, kind of like "Cheers" but I never really got on with that for some reason, there were some great sitcoms out from back then

Absolutely loved golden girls and wanted to live like them!

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 21:28

Imagine? @ssd Talk about retirement goals!

I also didn’t enjoy Cheers. I remember Cybil and Fraiser being on in gran’s on a Friday night and I wasn’t into those either! I did enjoy (later) Everybody Loves Raymond and King of Queens. I’ve always loved Friends too.

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 21:31

Oh Cybil, I completely forgot all about that! Christina Barinski as always stole the show if memory serves? I also loved "Roseanne" they're all coming back to me now

OP posts:
LeonoraFlorence · 08/07/2024 21:33

Ah yes! I loved Roseanne too. My gran knew all the best ones as she often visited family in Canada where they’d be showing!

LeonoraFlorence · 08/07/2024 21:35

It’s amazing how Friends has stood the test of time. I know it might not be wholly politically correct now but people still go back to it. After a horrendous berveament I watched it or had it on in the background daily. It’s so comforting.

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 21:39

Ah @LeonoraFlorence I'm sorry for your loss x Yeah it's definitely times like that or if you're sick that streaming really plays a blinder, your Gran sounds really cool

Thank you.x
She always was a cool gran.
I have the Golden Girls song stuck in my head now 😂 I always sing it to my DDs. I should definitely introduce older girls to the show!

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 21:59

It's such a feel good theme isn't it? Instantly recognizable too, well all the "cool kids" love all things retro now so maybe they would enjoy it?

Yes streaming kept his mind busy as he was sleeping 15/16 hours a day and couldn't get up when he first got it, was very sad to see an active 12 year old go like this. He is now nearly 20 and can quote friends off by heart and still has a soft spot for the Golden Girls.

DreamTheMoors · 09/07/2024 05:06

I remember when The Golden Girls first came on. And all the others too.
And Newhart - It was hysterical.
Actually there was Newhart in Chicago and Newhart in Maine. Remember Stephanie? 😂

SwordToFlamethrower · 09/07/2024 10:12

I'm watching it and have been for the last few years, it's on Disney plus!

Never fails to make me laugh out loud, the jokes are timeless and hilarious!

I love it so much

YesItsMe44 · 09/07/2024 16:51

I'm almost done rewatching Golden Girls. Friday nights was tv night. We also watched Reba and Gilmore Girls. In rewatching Golden Girls and Reba I was more aware of the comedic timing, and scenes where the actors are barely holding it together trying not to laugh. It seems classic comedy is now truly a classic!!

virgocatlover · 21/07/2024 09:35

Golden Girls is fabulous. I wasn't even born when it was on but it's timeless comedy and actually was quite ahead of its time with some of the storylines.

Scorchio84 · 21/07/2024 14:43

you're right @virgocatlover I'm delighted I discovered it again

Steaming was his lifeline when he couldn't go out the house, it kept his mind off being stuck at home sick. His 20 nearly now and still loves Friends and The Golden Girls

beguilingeyes · 25/07/2024 11:46

There was an episode where they were on a game show and Blanche had to complete the sentence 'Better late than...'
'Pregnant!' she said.
