Is anyone watching this? I loved the series originally and have read the book that the series is based on ( although that does seem tenuous)
The most recent episodes seem to be a real attack on the British NHS . I am shocked and just wondered what anyone else thought?

I've just started it... I mean I've binged the first season in a few days and really enjoying it.

BIWI · 01/07/2024 22:11

I've just started watching it - really enjoying it so far. But it does seem to be just a re-tread of ER! (Not that I'm complaining)

orangelotus · 01/07/2024 22:16

I know I loved it but honestly I think there's a weird political message coming out in this season
Would like to hear your views?
Feels like our free healthcare is being denigrated from all sides- terrifying when it's even happening in light weight tv shows

I started watching, I think it's really ridiculous but I'm strangely invested. It's trying to be another ER but not managing it, ER is probably my favourite show of all time so it's highly unlikely come close. They hit you over the head with the issues and don't get me started on that ludicrous psychiatrist 😡 and yet I keep watching.

orangelotus · 01/07/2024 22:32

Yes I know I'm a sucker for all those ridiculous shows, ER , Greys Anatomy, Nurse Jackie ( my absolute favourite!) etc but this has in this series gone on an all out attack on the NHS which is ironic as this is suppoyyo be about a "public " hospital. There's a scene where British patients are chanting " we prefer the Smerican system!"
A system where you can die from asthma or diabetes . I feel really manipulated and upset by it just wondering what anyone else who has hit as far as me thinks?

I cringed when watching that but put it down to the show being for an American audience.

I assumed that it was some sort of propaganda for their/the US healthcare system.

Those episodes might have been funded by certain political groups, big pharma etc. to contain that message.

On the whole not a patch on ER 😐

anyolddinosaur · 01/07/2024 22:55

Havent got to the knocking the NHS part but there have been plenty of comments about people being bankrupted by medical bills or being unable to pay for urgently needed treatment/ cant afford the copay/their insurance doesnt cover it.

Getting fed up of all the trans propaganda, even if their are some messages

Dont think it's brilliant but there isnt much great tv now.

Perr · 02/07/2024 13:59

I've just downloaded ep1 of this so am interested in what people think. I've seen some of Greys, House and The Resident. Never watched ER.

Propaganda is the word, ER had similar but it didn't feel as obvious, and more importantlyIagreed with it. The 14 year old on puberty blockers wanting a double mastectomy and psychiatrist Iggy is being cautious telling them them they'll get it when they're 15...wtf? And the surrogacy story where the emphasis is on the poor man who paid for the baby rather than the surrogate mother in the coma.

thecatneuterer · 02/07/2024 20:54

It's hilariously bad yet strangely watchable. But yes, all that UK based stuff was just plain odd. And the fact that they chose to base it in Hampstead, which was supposed to be a deprived area with a large immigrant community, was just ludicrous. Surely someone could have done a tiny bit of research and ascertained that Hampstead is one of the richest areas in the UK.

nibsterslert · 03/07/2024 22:36

Got to the end was truly terrible!😳

readingmakesmehappy · 05/07/2024 20:14

I watched the first three I think series but it just got so bonkers that I gave up

AmandaHoldensLips · 05/07/2024 20:40

I know my tolerance of a certain kind of trash is amazing!!

I'm only on season 4, but even since the covid episodes we have named it "new angsterdam" - it feels preachier every episode!

It was trying to solve racism one episode, colonism the next and the climate crisis after that which did me in.

Granted, I'm still watching it!

Oh is it?? I LOVED ER! I'll get started on it so.. thanks for the heads up

Sudename · 08/07/2024 15:57

I've been strangely sucked in as well. I watch a few episodes at a time and then think that was a pile o shite. On season 4 at the moment

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 08/07/2024 15:59

The deprived inner city district of Hampstead, with the cabbies (complete with Dick Van Dyke cor blimey gov cockney accents) queuing up for Max’s back street medical practice, was absolutely hilarious.

My medical student ds and nursing student dd loved it.

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 16:39

Okay I watched the first episode S1, it's a bit too Grey's Anatomy but I'll give one more ago sure

@Shimmyshimmycocobop ER is my favourite program too, well one anyway

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 08/07/2024 17:05

@Scorchio84 I re watch it from start to finish every few years 😊

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 17:12

Ah yeah me too @Shimmyshimmycocobop it used to be on More4 or whatever they're calling it now up until a year or two ago, it's an absolute classic, it went a bit awry towards the end when EVERYTHING was about Abby but even the worst episode is better than pretty much everything out now

drspouse · 08/07/2024 17:56

Oh dear, I've nearly got to the end of S1 and the poor girl who wanted a mastectomy, also the psychiatrist and his husband would not have been able to adopt from Bangladesh (just like in Modern Family).
Maybe I won't bother carrying on!

Scorchio84 · 08/07/2024 18:16

Oh? Maybe I'll keep going then?

AmandaHoldensLips · 08/07/2024 21:21

Hold the front page: the medical director is solving global warming.
In a SINGLE episode.
I mean, just wow.

Lostworlds · 08/07/2024 21:23

I liked watching the earlier episodes but when they moved to the Uk it was just awful!
I won’t give any spoilers but the last season was also terrible and felt very rushed!
