Omg I cannot wrap my head around this family. Imagine finding out all of that !!

I was in tears, what a story for them both.

FlowersAndFairiesAndPie · 11/06/2024 07:05

They didn't mention much about Martinas dad did they? I assumed it would be 2 sisters who had left the babies!

Two great shows over the past 2 days. It's interesting that the trauma of abandoning a baby leads to a relatively early death of the mother.

Mothership4two · 12/06/2024 07:10

I'm not sure it was trauma as there have been older mothers before on this programme that abandoned their babies. I expect it had more to do with poor health from growing up and living in poverty.

I think they said he disappeared in the 80s and they couldn't find any further record of him.

Vermeer · 12/06/2024 07:21

I always find myself thinking about the other people they presumably chose to investigate, started filming, researching etc, but couldn’t broadcast, either because they couldn’t get any leads, or because surviving birth family members were hostile.

Mothership4two · 12/06/2024 07:37

I sometimes worry (with all the Long Lost Family programmes) whether a child may have been born from rape when the mother has died and has never named the father or has never spoken about it but they trace him through DNA.

Mothership4two · 12/06/2024 07:41

Pretty unsettling to have a (married) man in his 30s having a secretive long-term relationship with a teenager from when she was 14 years (or possibly younger) who was obviously vulnerable.

dottiedodah · 12/06/2024 08:06

Mothership4two I watched this this morning, terribly sad . Poor girl, only a child herself. There was such a stigma then about "unmarried Mothers" and "gymslip pregnancies" Mum said it was akin to admitting being a prostitute! So poor girl became abused and made pregnant twice in the same year! Undcrupolous men like this go clean away with it FFS!

I think that too, when they get emotional looking at the father, how much they look like him etc. I think they are all aware of that as a possibility though.

Davina's face on this when she's delivering news. It's like a comedy show the faces she gurns.

MollyJustMight · 12/06/2024 22:58

So Susan did know her mothers name. When did Davina her tell her that? I missed something?

tennissquare · 13/06/2024 09:14

@MollyJustMight , I'm guessing Susan's mother is still alive so they didn't name her on camera.

MollyJustMight · 13/06/2024 09:54

Yes I guess that's why, thanks

Yes, or this kind of horror is uncovered — this must be another potential reason why the producers must surely start off researching/filming far more individuals than ultimately make it onto the screen.

Latenightreader · 13/06/2024 10:03

There was at least one long lost family where someone discovered that their mother had been raped by their biological father. It was very sensitively handled, but what a horrific thing to discover.

Mothership4two · 13/06/2024 10:05

The other situation is incest. I would expect, if it was uncovered, the team would have to privately inform the person?

Cross-posted.

Awful, @Latenightreader - I don't remember that programme

Her mum wrote a letter saying her surname was Roberts.

So sad that the mother rang social servies (I think?) and the message wasn't acted on immediately. Susan would have had a completely different life.

Definitely and getting her pregnant 3 times. He must have pressurised her to get rid of the babies.
