kazza yes, I noticed there were women's first round matches early in the week, whilst the men were still playing qualifying. But I think that was the same for Madrid as well.
I really don't like these extended tournaments- and i think the jury is out with the players and pundits too. Annabel was talking about it yesterday- they don't help the players who lose early, as they then have ages til the next tournament starts. They don't really help the top players, because there really isn't a lot of down time.
I know they allow more players to take part (and earn money) but they don't seem well thought out.
And there are a lot of injuries happening.
