Midsomer Murders being cancelled?

Can this really be true?

A new series started last week, and episode 2 would have been last night, but it wasn’t. On googling I’ve found reports suggesting the ratings may have dropped and it may be cancelled (although ITV have given some waffle about showing the remaining episodes at a later date).

I love Midsomer Murders, I’ll be gutted if it finishes.

Does anyone know any inside information?

Surely everyone in Midsomer is dead 🤔😂

Overtheatlantic · 22/04/2024 10:44

I love Midsomer Murders. But surprised there are any more posh people left to kill!

DoYouSmokePaul · 22/04/2024 10:46

Used to watch this every Sunday night with my uni pals. God knows why we were so into it as 18 year olds 🤣 I don’t know if we were trying to be ironic or what but I loved it ☺️

Often the victims are visitors, touring theatre company, guests at a sports event etc. There’s an endless supply!

The Trip Advisor reviews are appalling though.

Have loved MM from day one and often rewatch them, recently finished going through every single episode (have them on DVD).

Would be gutted if it were to end but I suspect they are showing them as one off episodes between other big budget series, they (ITV) have form for this.

DPotter · 22/04/2024 11:54

For the last couple of series ITV have not been consistent with day of transmission and there was a very long gap between the last penultimate and last episode from the last series so I guess they're not as committed to Midsommer Murders as they used to be. Sad as I love the show

LIZS · 22/04/2024 11:58

It is very popular overseas though, so can't see it being culled.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 22/04/2024 12:38

It's quintessentially British (probably why it's popular overseas) but it's not trendy and doesn't have female leads so ITV would rather show garbage like Trigger Point and Love Island and throw money at tired programmes like Britains Got Talent.

Very good!

FourLeggedBuckers · 22/04/2024 19:48

I hope not, I love it (for all it’s flaws).

If ratings are falling, ITV only have themselves to blame - they show new episodes at seemingly random intervals with limited advertising and no consistency within a series. If people don’t know it’s on, they aren’t going to watch it.

Make a series, show it once a week, in the same slot every week.

And advertise it - surely it can’t be that hard to target your online adverts for cosy murder shows to people who actually watch cosy murder shows. Stop advertising Love Island and bloody BGT to people who never watch the damn things.

ITV are the absolute worst for this kind of thing though. And don’t start me on the hell that is ITVX 🫣

LyndaSnellsSniff · 30/04/2024 20:31

They do seem to spread them out over months. I used to love Midsomer Murders but these days I just find the episodes soooo long with far too many ad breaks.

Midsummer Norton is a real place, I hadn’t realised that until I nursed a patient that came to be treated in our hospital. I remember exclaiming “How are you still alive?!” That didn’t go down well, they thought I was talking about their health issue 😂

eggandonion · 30/04/2024 20:44

In my husband's opinion the best ones have the proper Barnaby and Warren from This Life. And occult types or Carnivals o r funfairs.
I like Joyce and a fete.
But will watch new episodes. With a cuppa and a Mr Kipling slice.

diddl · 30/04/2024 21:44

I think a lot of the older ones were better.

Always remember the one with the Rainbirds in.

Think that might have been the first one?

Brian Cant's son Richard as Dennis Rainbird & the fabulous Elizabeth Spriggs as Iris Rainbird.

Stopsnowing · 30/04/2024 21:47

watching it now!

StMarieforme · 30/04/2024 22:06

Couldn't cope with losing MM AND Vera!!

Needmorelego · 30/04/2024 22:10

@MissyB1 😂
I went on a coach trip to the seaside several years ago. When we were getting back on our coach I noticed the coach next to us was from Midsummer Norton. Their driver went to open the boot and I said "That's risky - a dead body is probably going to roll out" 😂
None of my travel companions got the joke 🙁

JennyForeigner · 30/04/2024 22:19

What, no! I haven't written my school appeals episode yet! I was going to have someone sneakily rent while their main residence was elsewhere, someone pip them to the post by moving the main door of their residence round the corner and a conspiracy amongst the admissions committee to change the distance calculation from road to across the Village Green.

It was going to be so epic.

Perhaps they ran out of bunting...

It has never been the same since John Nettles left.
