The article linked to upthread is a bit difficult to follow because of tiny bits of text between so many adverts, but it's worth persevering. Ella Maisy Purvis will play Patience, the autistic character like Astrid, but the actress herself is ND as are many of the cast and crew.
The only thing that concerns me about the American remake is that in the US, autism is seen as a disease to be cured, not a neurological condition. Hopefully the large contingent of people with ND involved in it will help to dispel that commonly held misconception.
For anyone who is put off watching it so far as its in French with subtitles, here's a quick overview.
The Astrid plot lines are all a bit like the Jonathan Creek ones, a body has been found and it appears that the only explanation for the crime is an occult or supernatural one, which Astrid solves by using her unique way of observing the situation.
There is a second storyline woven through the crime solving which is Astrid's friendship with the detective Raphaelle and it explores the differences between their NT and ND worlds and the interactions they have. Astrid starts series 1 as overwhelmed by most things in the NT world to the point of meltdown or shutdown whenever she is outside her comfort zone. She cannot distinguish a jokey comment and takes all interaction as seriously meant. Gradually through the series, (I'm currently watching series 3 ) Astrid overcomes some of her anxiety and has a friendship with Raphaelle, the female detective, leading to social interaction etc.
Astrid also attends a support group and sometimes the plot involves another member helping to solve the crime using their individual talents.
How much the American series will be like the French one is anyone's guess, but with some of the actors and crew being ND, I'm hoping Patience is a success which can help with knowledge of and acceptance of our autistic and ND family and friends within the wider community.
