I missed it the first time but just noticed it's now on netflix. Just wondering if it's any good?

I enjoyed it. It’s the one thing I found James Corden bearable in!

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 23/03/2024 13:54

I remember enjoying it at the time. I always found those Kay Mellor series really watchable.

ASighMadeOfStone · 23/03/2024 13:59

Everything Kay Mellor did was great. Funny, but poignant at the same time.

LittleWeed2 · 23/03/2024 14:04

It’s brilliant imv.
Think I’m on about series 3 - found it by accident.

Rosieleerose · 23/03/2024 21:11

I missed it first time round. But absolutely loved it and binged watched this week.
A few of the actors are in Gavin and Stacey. But because they are so good at acting you don't even think of them as Nessa, Pam, Smithy etc
It is also nice to see/remember life in early 2000's - less mobile phone usage, the fashions etc

mamatoTails · 23/03/2024 21:17

I've just discovered it on Netflix, never watched it before. Coming to the end of series one and think it's great!

Rosieleerose · 23/03/2024 21:18

If anyone has watched it
spoiler alert

What did you think of the mother and son storyline. I thought they were going to have romantic feelings for each other at one point!

Skybluepinky · 23/03/2024 21:20

I loved it when it was on tv, no idea if it’s dated well or not.

EarringsandLipstick · 23/03/2024 21:25

I'm just watching on Netflix for the first time. S1 was brilliant, sharp, funny & poignant. Wouldn't get made today. James Corden is great in it, really subtle & affecting acting.

S2 gets a little tedious.

It's very 'real'. The characters are genuinely overweight, not doing some pretend version.

OooScotland · 23/03/2024 21:28

I liked it, but I’m in my fifties and from the North of England. YMMV.

ageingdisgracefully · 23/03/2024 21:55

I loved it, but I think series 1 is the best. It's on Prime too, for those who don't have Netflix.

It's funny, warm and real. Find Kelly really annoying though.

Yes! It occurred to me at one point that two of them were Nessa and Smithy but it took you saying that to realise that Pam was there too!

Clutchpearlsandgasp · 23/03/2024 23:29

Kelly's husband, Kevin, is also in G&S (albeit only one episode), he plays the vicar who marries Dawn and Pete when they renew their vows.

areyoutheregod · 24/03/2024 07:09

Yes watched it the first time around and really loved it. Found it on Netflix and watching again. Can’t say I found it as funny this time around but still worth watching.

Netaporter · 24/03/2024 20:43

Loved it first time round, it is of its time tho.

Ihatemondays1962 · 26/03/2024 21:18

I missed this when it was originally on and came across it on netflix. I am really enjoying it, its easy watching after work when you don't want to think too much.

We’ve just started it and I thought it was ahead of its time in terms of commentary on diet culture etc

BeepBoopBop · 26/03/2024 22:00

God yes! Just binged it last week!

rooftopbird · 28/03/2024 08:37

The is weird, I only discovered it last weekend and binged up to series 2!

They must have promoted it!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 28/03/2024 08:50

I've been watching it as also missed it first time around. Really enjoying it and James Corden's main two episodes are really well done and so heartbreaking. It's so hard to imagine him at Smithy after watching him in this.

Newsenmum · 05/05/2024 20:03

Just watched it! But did it get cancelled? Feels like there should have been more after season 4.

SabreIsMyFave · 05/05/2024 21:24

I watched this about a year and a half ago on some random channel like W (can't remember now,) and am now rewatching on Netflix with DH (who is loving it!) It's sooooo good. Grin One of the best shows I've ever seen to be honest.

I watched it first time round too - 2000-2004. Loads of big stars in it, and yeah, 3 big stars from Gavin and Stacey. (4 if you include Sheridan Smith. She had small roles in both G & S, and Fat Friends.)

@Newsenmum Fat Friends finished because Kay Mellor felt she couldn't go any further with the characters and had had enough of it. I disagree! I think it could have gone on for years! Smile

Cattyisbatty · 06/05/2024 08:21

I bringer watched it recently recovering from surgery. Some of it was familiar to me so I watched a few episodes when it came out, but not avidly.
i enjoyed it again, but also thought there’s no way it would be made today! Even the title - it would be ‘Friends Living with Obesity’ 😜
James Corden was great in it, before he became an egg wanker!!

I felt like there were some unanswered questions like Paul’s brother flirting with Kelly (am I right?) and was Betty really planning on living with them forever? I’d also love to know why Val and Alan disappeared!

SallyWD · 06/05/2024 11:48

I watched it out of curiosity recently. I thought it was good. It's kind of how I expected - very mainstream comedy and quite sentimental. I suppose it's not exactly my sort of humour. I prefer something a little more edgy but I still enjoyed it. It's very watchable.
