Hi,

I wondered if you might know of other very family friendly series like the Victorian Farm?

I'm looking for more tv series to watch with my DS, who is super-nervous just now. We like winterwatch and the victorian farm series and the edwardian farm and others but are a bit short of ideas otherwise.

Things that are factual or sitcoms, with no comic horror in them are what we're looking for.

Grateful for any recommendations. Any network pay or otherwise is fine.

Thanks!

The Back in Time ... BBC series.

YellowHatt · 09/03/2024 20:56

I went down a similar rabbit hole. The ones I found were:
All the eras of Victorian Farm starting with Tales of the Green Valley
Secrets of the Castle
24 Hours in the Past
Victorian Bakers
Back in Time for Tea (and the related Back in Times)
The 1900 House
The Victorian Slum

Tales from the green valley was the forerunner of victorian farm
We love it :)

SomersetTart · 09/03/2024 21:52

The people who made The Victorian Farm also did a series called The Tudor Monastery Farm.

MadamVastra · 09/03/2024 21:53

I was going to say the Tudor farm! Love me a bit of Ruth 😂

SomersetTart · 09/03/2024 21:56

@MadamVastra I love Ruth too! The only thing better than Ruth is when it's Ruth AND her daughter.

Mumof1andacat · 09/03/2024 22:09

The back in time series on bbc are brilliant

Mischmasch · 09/03/2024 22:10

Definitely Tales of the Green Valley! We live in a farmhouse of similar age and it gives me a bit of a shiver to imagine the original inhabitants of our house dressing, cooking and working the land as they do in the series.

I love This Farming Life too.

What about Canal Boat Diaries? That’s a lovely, gentle show as well.

I second Pottery Throw Down on ch4. The skills and talent are fab, lovely people, the process is interesting and the judging is always really constructive and supportive. Leaves you feeling like all is well with the world.

'Would I lie to you' on BBC is witty good family fun.

Thank you very much, this is fantastic. We'll be sorted with all this lovely list.

How do we find all these things if they are no longer on iPlayer? Do I buy boxed sets or something? Thanks!

I found a lot of it on YouTube.

Another vote for Canal Boat Diaries here. Gentle landscapes, pace and people. Robbie the presenter is fabulous company and honest about struggles he's had to overcome. Fantastic music too. From his Instagram page it looks like there might be a new series coming soon.

Landscape artist of the year is lovely

I'm sure the team from Victorian Farm also did another series that focused on Victorian shops. 1 I recall was the Victorian pharmacy. There was another series looking at the corner shop through the ages.

ArghhWhatNext · 10/03/2024 13:18

All creatures great and small is on channel 5 - you can find all the series there.
Race Across The World, too. Perhaps with the exception of the American one.

My "boring" comfort watch is Steve Marsh's travel vlog on YouTube. He a very cheerful ordinary Scottish man who travels about Europe on trains, ferries, buses and unusual flights and just explores. He's totally unpretentious and just seems to get low key enjoyment out of everything he tries, I find it very soothing!

IIRC there was also Victorian Kitchen and Victorian Kitchen Garden. Those weren't the same team, though.
