Has anybody been watching this?

I read the books and watched the Richard Chamberlain one in the 80’s this new adaptation is so much better and more authentic. All Japanese actors speaking Japanese with English subtitles. 3 episodes out so far I’m really enjoying it

I am. Only on episode 2. Think it’s brilliantly done and utterly gripping.

I really like it but find the English man really annoying & he’s putting me off a bit!

I know what you mean, I’d have preferred someone like Aidan Turner but chamberlain was too one dimensional and didn’t have the rugged sea dog look so this one is better.

I'm loving it! On episode 2 so far.

Absolutely loving it! Hiroyuki Sanada is my favourite Japanese actor and he is brilliant as Torunaga.

I’m hating having to wait for new episodes to be released

We’ve only watched the first episode and I love it. Hiroyuki Sanada is wonderful.

I am torn between liking and hating English man (Captain Wentworth from Persuasion - I’m amusing myself by imagining Anne Elliott back home in England). He really isn’t doing himself many favours so far. Everything has gone so very badly wrong.

DH wants us to finish season 2 of the Bear before watching any more though. 😠

It is very good. I must admit I spent much of the first episode wondering if the actor was James Norton though

Oh, I’m loving it. Looks beautiful, carefully plotted, and the acting is great.

I’ll admit I did need them to spell out to me why they were quite so interested in Blackthorne though, but what can I say, my background knowledge of 17th century international politics is a bit lacking…

Sanada is epic, as always. I don’t mind Jarvis too much, though there are moments where he seems to think he’s in a completely different show to everyone else, it’s a bit Richard Burton meets Tom Hardy at times. But he’s not difficult on the eye and I’ll happily admit to being that shallow sometimes.

Absolutely loving Tadanobu Sato as Yabushige, he’s walking away with every scene he’s in. I laughed so much as the whole, “I just happened to be wandering by AGAIN while the barbarian was being attacked by bandits..”

Oh I'm loving it! A bit confused as to what's going on need to pay more attention to the subs but a good excuse to rewatch it. I love the English guy he is giving me Tom Hardy vibes 😬

The main guy is doing his best to sound like Richard Burton

I read somewhere else online that it’s like watching someone do an impression of Tom Hardy doing an impression of Richard Burton 😅

Kind of works, though. I very much enjoyed the line “You’re a very silly man and your hair looks like the tail of a pony!”

I’m also enjoying this, DP had to give up as he can’t cope with the subtitles.

Main chap is a big odd imho, is he wearing contacts - his eyes look really weird.

i must admit, I keep having nightmares about that poor chap who was boiled alive in episode one.

Am so looking forward to watching this. Can I just say I think Hiroyuki Sanada is very handsome.

I've worried about boiled guy a lot too! Surely by the time you looked like that you'd be long dead?? That was horrible.

I was also expecting that prostitute to kill the admin guy, given what she had overheard/gleaned about what the governer guy is into.

BUT I've only seen the first episode! Maybe she'll reemerge!

I just watched episode 4, it's so good! Can't wait for episode 5 now. This for me is the best series since Chernobyl.

This waiting a week for new episodes is killing me. It’s a 10 episode series. 20 years ago we wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at this but now we’re the binge generation 😂

I am enjoying this but the main actor seems to be basing his performance on 'drunk man bumbling around'

From what I can recall of the book, Blackthorne isn't a very sympathetic character until some way into the book, so I'm guessing the show will follow suit.

I haven't started watching yet. I'm too excited. It's a one of the few books I have read repeatedly although it has been a few years since my last outing.

Has anyone re-read in anticipation?

I'm glad I found this thread absolutely loving it, wish I could binge instead of waiting a week for each episode though!

I think I'll wait til all the episodes are out before I watch. I'm already having trauma waiting for another programme (Halo) to come on each Thursday.

It’s so good! Watched episode 4 last night.

I haven’t read the book but assumed Blackthorne is supposed to be a rogue/implusive/slightly unlikeable but presumably evolves due the chances he is given and the more honourable people he is exposed to.

whoever said he was Tom Hardy esque was spot on.

Blackthorne is supposed to be a complete dick for the first chunk of the story, isn't he? A total asshole so convinced of his own superiority?

I think I might re-read before watching so will need to hide this thread now!
