I've just starting watching this on Netflix and it's very engaging so far

Lots of brilliant actors on it

Including one of my favourite actresses that I've barely seen lately Nichola Burley

I wish she was in more on TV and film. No idea how large her role in this even is yet

It seems very well cast so far although I'm only halfway through Episode 1

It was on BBC 11 years ago, but very well scripted and filmed. I wasn't sure about Anna Maxwell Martin but the rest of the cast were stellar.

Twazique · 22/02/2024 19:31

I am on episode two and I am really enjoying it, excellent cast!

TrulyScrumptiousTS · 22/02/2024 19:41

Oh I didn't realise it was that old not that it matters

I'm enjoying it very much so far

I also didn't realise it's based on a P D James novel based on Bennet and Darcy etc from Pride and Prejudice

I'm watching this. I've seen 2 episodes, number 3 tonight!

superking · 22/02/2024 20:02

I love this and the book is fab too.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 22/02/2024 20:05

I didn't know it was on Nexflix. I love it. It has 2 of my favourite Matthews and the very lovely James Norton. I thought Anna Maxwell Martin did a great job as Elizabeth.

upinaballoon · 22/02/2024 20:16

I'm not watching it now on Netflix but I have seen it. I thought Matthew Goode was a credibly attractive Wickham, too.

rookiemere · 22/02/2024 20:17

I'm struggling with it. I love most of the actors but felt many were miscast particularly Anna Maxwell Martin. We watched half an episode and have no great desire to return to it.

Matthew Rhys made me laugh with this on Twitter

I binged this last weekend, I LOVED it! Thought the casting was brilliant, the script very plausibly Austen-ish, and I'm always a sucker for a murder mystery. Love both the Matthews, and thought AMM was a great Lizzie Bennett.

Willmafrockfit · 23/02/2024 05:38

i enjoyed episode 1
it is strange that it is being watched by so many on netflix, it does have a great cast.

MiltonNorthern · 23/02/2024 05:52

I really enjoyed this but didn't really like Anna maxwell Martin for Elizabeth. She acted well but I think she was a little old (sorry)

Willmafrockfit · 23/02/2024 06:18

AMM still has that jokey smith that she uses in Motherland

Twazique · 23/02/2024 12:10

I think she is supposed to be older, ten years older maybe?

I think she is supposed to be older, ten years older maybe?

According to google she is 46, so would have been 35 when filming? Given that Darcy and Elizabeth had a small child and she got pregnant again I would have thought it was set within 5-8 years of their marriage when Elizabeth had been 21. So by those measures she was a bit too old I think.

2pence · 23/02/2024 19:24

Both far too old for Darcy and Elizabeth. I love Anna Maxwell Martin in Motherland but think she was as woefully miscast as the 90's Jane Bennet was.

Elizabeth has fine eyes and is second in beauty only to Jane. She's "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me". Anna Maxwell Martin has never been a pretty actress. She's an outstanding character actress but even here I didn't see the wit or teasing playfulness that is written by Austen. Put simply, I couldn't recognise the novel's Elizabeth Bennet here so couldn't view her as Austen's character.

Is it shallow that she should be passably attractive to sell the portrayal? Perhaps, but the character's intelligence and humour were also missing for me. One element missing can be overlooked, but not both.

2pence · 23/02/2024 19:26

Oh and the brilliantly cast Georgiana was 21, "the age I met you" so it's set 6 years in future which would fit with son's age too. Darcy would be early 40s, Elizabeth 27ish.

Can't argue with the maths! Grin
