One Day - is Emma meant to be like this?

Have never read the book. Saw the film years ago but don't remember loads about it 😳.

Am on ep 3 of the Netflix show and Emma is just so bloody miserable and sour? She's vile to Dexter and I don't get why someone as charismatic as him would bother with her relentless negativity and moaning. I seem to remember Anne Hathaway's Emma having more about her? The connection between her Emma and Jim Sturgess's Dexter was much more believable?

Not sure I can be arsed persevering tbh.

I loved the series, I thought the casting was perfect and much better than the film.

It odd that so many people didn’t like Ambika Mod as Emma. So many threads about it, it’s quite the mystery.

People are acting like they are very different lookswise.

Well, they are. He is absolutely gorgeous. The pairing is ridiculous.

We always see stereotypically "beautiful" women with less attractive men though?

It really is.. and coming from other women too. Shocked at women thinking Emma shouldn't be with someone like him.

Ambika Mod was recently on Graham Norton - she was beautiful, radiant (and tiny!) with a dry sense of humour and quite funny. I’m struggling to see what is unattractive about her, she’s gorgeous. It’s baffling to me. Interesting that they didn’t have Leo on with her.

She also seemed nervous … but guess it’s quite intimidating to find yourself sitting next to Ian Mackellan and Michael Sheen - two acting greats - when it’s your second acting gig and your show is one of the most viewed new launches ever on Netflix. She must be overwhelmed!

I predict she will be a major Hollywood star.

fatphalange · 28/02/2024 07:17

I thought she was fab

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/02/2024 16:32

If anyone looked vacuous it was Dexter!

I don't get it either. She's beautiful so wonder if it's a racist element..

shearwater2 · 29/02/2024 12:49

That was my thought too @tryingtohelp82.

There are so many racist comments on FB when a black or Asian actor is cast in anything, or even if a company uses a black model for their clothes.

At best it's xenophobic and parochial. Films, TV and clothing brands have a global audience and a large number of the potential audience are non-white.

I thought she was great as well and really held her own.

They both did feature on Graham Nortons radio show. I have seen them both interviewed a couple of times and I find Leo quite boring and shy, he needs to work on this because an interesting interviewee he ain't

Theonlylonely · 29/02/2024 23:10

@shearwater2 yes the audience is global for this - so I expect having her as the lead will create higher demand for it

Mmmm19 · 08/03/2024 23:24

I haven’t read the book or seen the film but I loved it and all the characters actually, especially the leads. Not sure I could watch the film now as can’t imagine Anne Hathaway at all

similar to another poster I binge watched it and sobbed

He really is! I had to see how old he was in real life 😆

Me too. I’ve just turned 40 😥

I seen to remember that when Emma told Dex that she'd noticed him in college, he said he'd seen her too. But when she questioned him about where he'd seen her he sheepishly laughed & she said something like 'oh that's right you didn't'
My interpretation was that he fed her a line to reciprocate but it wasn't true...

I don't actually think he's good looking but I can see how others would find him so. Same with Emma

Yes this. Also while I don’t agree at all that dex wouldn’t have found Emma attractive, I didn’t see it as him being instantly head over heels at the ball more standard level of attracted on a night out as someone that sleeps around a lot! Then he became intrigued over the course of the evening/ following day.

Exactly. The point of the book is that they didn't get together until 20 years later! They were friends. He probably thought she was a challenge to get into bed, especially as the Yah girls he was used to were falling over themselves to sleep with him. Then once she didn't it turned into a challenge, then intrigue, then friendship then love. That seems fairly believable to me.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 19/03/2024 13:53

I haven't read the book or seen the film, but this drew me in. I went to a similar uni around the same time so the setting, the era and the first jobs, etc all resonated with me. I thought the casting was great and the performances too. Dexter reminded me of a couple of good looking posh guys at uni. I thought Ambika Mod was brilliant.

EasternStandard · 19/03/2024 13:55

I couldn’t get into it

The characters were too annoying

monicagellerbing · 21/03/2024 14:35

I've only seen the clips on gogglebox but I can't understand the casting of the actress at all. No on screen chemistry and not 'pretty' enough. She was excellent as the junior doctor in This Is Going To Hurt but she's been cast wrongly in this role

MumHereAgain2023 · 25/03/2024 09:40

Loved the movie. Hate the show didn't even get into first episode. So disappointing

JiraffDeSaki · 25/03/2024 21:31

I binged this series a couple of weeks ago having not read the book or seen the film.

I was hooked from the first episode, and I'm still bloody traumatised by the end 2 weeks later. I totally bought into the characters and loved their building chemistry throughout. Sure she was snippy and sarcastic, that was her character...the number of times the emotionally oblivious arsehole Dex hurt her though, the "no strings" FWB offer was particularly awful.
