AFTERSUN, a film starring starring Paul Mescal and Frankie Corlo is on BBC2, Sunday 11/Feb/24 at 11.15 pm
You might have missed it @Blondeshavemorefun. It's supposed to be good. I'm recording it.

Thanks for the tip, it's the most wonderful film but I'm not surprised it's on late.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/02/2024 22:02

Thanks @LadyEloise1 No hadn't seen it

Will set sky

What's it's about

DontBeAPrickDarren · 10/02/2024 22:16

A single father on holiday with his young daughter. It’s very good, emotional in places, uneasy in others. Both leads are excellent.

tennissquare · 10/02/2024 22:59

@Blondeshavemorefun , it shows mental health struggles with an ambiguous ending. You might want to read up in advance if you have any concerns.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 13/02/2024 02:04

Watched it tonight. It was ok

Ridiculous24 · 13/02/2024 05:47

I've watched about 20 minutes. It hasn't grabbed me. Is it worth finishing?

Yes. The first 45 mins are quite mudane and slow, but it's to help you understand and get to know Sophie and Callum. The pay off is worth it.

I thought it was really dull and god knows why Paul Mescal was nominated for an Oscar for this, unless they turned his category into best performance by a back?!

Phew !
I'm not alone then.
I thought it was sh*te and was really looking forward to seeing the movie after the rave reviews.
A NYT film critic called it ".....astonishing and devastating..."
It got an approval rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I'm not sure we watched the same film Smile
Why was Paul Mescal given the part. Surely there were lots of young Scottish actors available for the part ?
I'm delighted Paul Mescal is doing so well but thought that odd.

I also didn't like it, nothing happened and feel quite bad as I wanted him to drown, sorry.

takeitaisyasyoucan · 13/02/2024 18:18

Yes @Teawithchocolate Nothing happened, it was soooo boring. But I didn't want him to drown.
And I hated the ending where we don't really know what happened.

Teawithchocolate · 13/02/2024 18:39

Ah @takeitaisyasyoucan I am still feeling guilty about stating that about drowning. I could tell the writer was wanting us to feel something but I sadly wasn't able to, however reading the reviews on rotten tomatoes the film seems to have really touched people.

Willmafrockfit · 13/02/2024 20:02

the young girl was amazing, it was lovely and gentle but i wish i understood before i watched it.

Icantbedoingwithit · 13/02/2024 20:05

Absolutely beautiful movie. Watched it twice. Still think about it today.

RestingPassportFace · 13/02/2024 20:50

It might not show it explicitly but I thought it was very heavily implied that her father dies/disappears/kills himself.
They dance to Under Pressure "This is our last dance..."
She's been rewatching the home movie footage as that's all she has left to hold onto/to try and work out what she missed at the time.
Good film but bleak. Director wanted us to think memories mean the love isn't diminished but having had a mum, whose father killed himself, I struggle with it tbf.
