Thanks for the new thread

I do rather feel for Trixie. She really can’t get a break with a steady relationship.

So, you know when the young mum went into Labour on the beach? Why did they drive all the way back to London? Surely 2 Cub leaders would have have the wherewithal to find a closer hospital.

Was wondering why I couldn't post on the old thread!

I rolled my eyes a lot in this episode, Trixie suddenly being very dense when it's obvious Mathew is broke. 🙄

Sheila being a shit mother and having no clue her kid was being washed out to sea and then seriously ill that evening. 🙄

The mum in China being so easily contactable... 🙄

Dr Timothy being a better Dr than his father 🙄

The young parents who had been in care being able to suddenly know how to parent 🙄

Jitterybugs · 04/02/2024 22:37

Surely they could have set up a comfy, discreet spot in the sand dunes and let the young mum give birth using the homemade changing towels to preserve her dignity. The beach had a doctor and a full complement of midwives 😂

Just checking in on the new thread...

Exactly

I never had a changing towel. I am so the right age. I do now have a big hoody towel robe thing, but actually, I think the Shelagh Turner version is better.

I'm no expert, but I thought retinoblastoma showed up in flash photos, as you don't get the red eye reflex showing, so it seems doubtful that, fabulous though she is, Nurse Crane could capture it on a grey day on a British beach.
Also the idea that the fostering agency would give a shit about May's biological mother's opinion in those days seems a bit far fetched. Surely a family like the Turners would have been considered above reproach?
And I've missed a few episodes but how did car mechanic come pastor Cyril become a Social Worker almost overnight? I used to love CTMW but it started going downhill once they moved away from the original books and it's all gettinb a bit ridiculous now.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 04/02/2024 23:12

A couple of episodes he saw an ad in the paper about a 6-week course to become a social worker.

regularmumnotacoolmum · 04/02/2024 23:18

Tonight's episode felt very scatty and all over the place. Too many important issues have been brought in too late on in the series

whiteboardking · 04/02/2024 23:26

I still like it but am 2-3 episodes behind. It's defo more soap opera than anything else recently. Was all about Fred & tetanus & baby with hip issues. My sister had same hip issue in 1965..,

ChocHotolate · 06/02/2024 10:42

A very minor point but when Dr Turner listened to May's chest before she went to hospital he put his stethoscope in backwards. No wonder he didn't hear any crackles, he would not have heard anything!

This has perfectly summed up this series so far, for me Grin

And the left earpiece was twisted as well - I thought the same, won't hear a thing like that.

I thought the same about May's birth mother. 🤔

cheapskatemum · 06/02/2024 11:49

These days I watch and cringe at the Turner family's acting. The adults completely ham it up & the children are very cute, but completely wooden.

whiteboardking · 19/02/2024 22:20

I thought Sunday was a bit better but it's all gone very twee. Not sure a super rich woman would let son Trixie& grandson end up homeless

OrlandointheWilderness · 25/02/2024 22:57

I'm bloody hating Matthew at the moment. What a dick.

CTMfanbutnotthesame · 28/02/2024 11:28

I used to love CTM (I still do) but it's unrecognisable as a series now. Where is Sister Julienne with her moving, tear inducing quotes. She was a wonderful character and some of the things she would say have genuinely helped me through some tough times by giving me a different perspective on things. I know she isn't a real character, but the writing for her character was impeccable. She always says (or used to say) the right thing and put you at immediate ease. Now we're lucky to see her and she's no longer involved in any storylines.

I knew it was losing it when it was no longer reducing me to tears and not just with the obviously sad scenes. Re-watch the moment Sister MJ meets Valerie in the kitchen at Nonnatus House, and she recalls delivering her. Bloody hell, they are only having a conversation but it was so moving. When Chummy's mother died - I was sobbing. Not just a few tears down my cheeks, sobbing into a tissue. My husband had to comfort me, it moved me so much. There's nothing like that now - it's just a predictable, soap opera style drama. I still watch it but it's not the same. It needs to come to a conclusion. I can only imagine that they are dragging it out to the early 70's when the Order closed down. If so, there are another 2/3 series to go yet.

MsForgetful · 28/02/2024 12:16

I am so annoyed what they've done to Trixie's character, and poor Matthew. Suddenly he is incompetent and his mother, I guess hates him enough to take the car in front of people?? he's broke and taking his young son from Trixie and leaving her struggling with it all, including the shame, on her own? I am not enjoying it as much either. Its my fav show! It's sad, I would rather it ended than have this.

Justwrong68 · 10/02/2025 07:39

It's hard to believe Heidi Thomas has written every series. Last night's (09/02/225) felt like a completely different writer. There definitely a feeling that it's lost direction, but a few things stuck out as unlikely; sister julienne being shocked by racism in 1970 (!), sister Monica Joan telling a radio reporter that ' this too will pass' regarding the bin men strike, after an outbreak of Weil's disease. Also, Cyril's weird and vague declaration to Rosalind.

PumpkinSpicedTea · 10/02/2025 07:50

I love Call the Midwife but have noticed, especially in this series, that each scene is sooo short. If anyone knows what I mean?

For example, two characters will walk outside and look around and maybe say one line then it's onto another scene that lasts less than a minute etc. It's hard to explain but hopefully someone knows what I mean 😂

I've watched CtM for years but it's a wee annoyance now as I can't stop noticing it!
