Cully Midsomer Murders

I've just been watching the episode featuring Cully's wedding and was struck by how friendless she seems. She appears to be a friendly, personable young woman but the only confidante she had to turn to when things were difficult was her father's colleague. The night before her wedding and morning of it, it was just her and Joyce in the house; no old school friends, or Uni friends or even neighbours milling around, she had no bridesmaids or maids or honours or cousins helping her to get ready or taking her out for a drink or a meal in the days leading up to the wedding.

In the episode featuring a reunion of old school friends she seemed the odd one out, that no one had bothered to keep in touch with across the years. When the booked meal in a restaurant fell through, the only people she could invite along were her parents and, again, her father's new colleague.

She just never seems to have any friends, and is always hanging around her dad's latest sergeant, who ever that may be.

Why does Cully have no friends?

Because if they showed that there would be less time for murders?

ElmtreeMama · 08/01/2024 21:31

I find her to be a bit of a bore tbh.

Edited

But in the time they were showing her having drinks with and confiding in Ben she could just as easily have been having drinks with and confiding in 'Michelle' her best friend from drama school, or 'Sally' her close cousin since childhood. It would have been far more realistic.

Is Cully her full name or just a nickname name? Always wondered that

I really miss Joyce and Cully and the John Nettles Barnaby. The new lot just aren’t the same.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/01/2024 22:24

She does have a lot of friends in the books. Her and Nicolas are always saying they are having friends round for parties or going out with friends.
They're always surrounded by other theatre people.

They must have found it easier not to bother in the TV shows.

There was episode with old school friends but they turned out to be bullies and moved on, and another was brought up in a home for girls and was a blackmailer.

ElmtreeMama · 10/01/2024 09:57

@Toddlerteaplease it's her real name, she's named after where Tom and Joyce went on honeymoon I believe.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/01/2024 10:05

Who’d want to be friends with her? The statistical likelihood is that you will end up not only dead but murdered in a humiliating way like being killed by a giant cheese.

gothicomedy · 12/01/2024 21:34

The only one of her old school 'friends' I can imagine her hanging around with is Cassie ( the one with the brother). The other two were a pair of weirdos and I can totally understand Joyce trying to discourage Cully from trying to re-establish contace.

"Hello Cully, what are you doing here?"

Oh how I miss Terry Wogan quoting that of a morning.

I too watched rhe wedding episode again the other night and thought what a serious misery she is

Yes, we both say that!
Good old Terry, used to love him talking about the latest episode of Midsomer Massacres!!! 😂

gothicomedy · 19/01/2024 21:08

Don't remember Terry Wogan saying that.

I was watching a very old episode recently and Cully seemed much more softly spoken and less self assured. I don't know why they developed her the way they did. Also, why didn't they GIVE HER SOME FRIENDS? She looked absolutely pathetic in the school reunion and wedding episodes. I hope Betty Barnaby fared better in life and had a few mates around when she needed them.
