Just caught the first episode of this new Stephen Fry quiz show, and I think I must be dead. It's been going on, seemingly, all afternoon, and just gets slower and slower. Watching paint dry suddenly seems to be a far more attractive option.

OP posts:
Samcro · 01/01/2024 18:54

I quite liked it

LadySlipper · 01/01/2024 19:01

The US version certainly does move along a lot more quickly! It's my favourite quiz show and I was delighted it has finally come over here, but I have to agree with you, it did seem to go over forever.

Pipsquiggle · 01/01/2024 19:04

Should just be 30 mins, went on far too long.

Hate to say it but not sure Stephen Fry is right for the presenting role. He seemed a bit wooden

duc748 · 01/01/2024 23:11

This is an institution in the US, isn't it? Watched a bit, never seen it before. I assume the US version is a bit snappier?

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2024 23:13

I couldn't get past the format of answering the question with a question. It seems completely pointless and for the most part grammatically incorrect.

Samcro · 03/01/2024 09:08

i think its the presenter. he is just so dull.

ThisBloodyWeather · 03/01/2024 09:12

I saw it for the first time the other day. Stephen Fry seemed very slow and boring, and the format was dull. I switched it off after 15 minutes.

MrsMitford3 · 03/01/2024 09:18

I was also looking forward to it-I have seen the American version which is like an institution there.

I can't put my finger on why it didn't work but amongst other things-doesn't suit Stephen Fry at all-he is very clever and think would be better on very cerebral shows like Mastermind/University Challenge type-here what you need is a bit more pace and enthusiasm. It just seemed to drag.
Questions ok/interesting but the whole "answer in the form of a question" seems ponderous and adds nothing.
It takes itself very seriously-does it want to be Mastermind? Because it is more like The Chase but much, much less entertaining.
Millionaire much more fun/suspenceful to watch.

This just seems to have very little to engage.
Even production values low-set straight out of the 70's.

Oh well.

Shellingbynight · 03/01/2024 09:57

I agree with all you've said @MrsMitford3
We watched the first episode and won't be watching any more. The format of having to reply in the form of a question is really annoying. I don't like Steven Fry anyway but this certainly isn't his type of show. The production values were so low rent too, that really surprised me.

LunaNorth · 03/01/2024 09:59

Is Stephen Fry skint?

It was like the Geography teacher running the school Christmas quiz.

TheMindfulMum · 03/01/2024 10:06

I've also seen the American version, and loved it, so was really looking forward to this starting but.... was bitterly disappointed! It was so dry. I love Fry but not in this role I don't think. I think the UK producers were thinking it's an easy bandwagon to jump on given it's a hit in the States but something just did not work. It was dull. I can't see it lasting.

duc748 · 03/01/2024 11:18

Fifteen To One was better!

Spirallingdownwards · 03/01/2024 11:20

So so disappointed. Just watched episode1.

The US version is great. Stephen Fry was talking far too much and simply sucked all life out of what is the best US quiz show!

whomoon · 05/01/2024 16:22

I usually enjoy the ITV programmes of an afternoon and will usually just have them on even if I’m not engaged with it, but the one thing I don’t like the most about this is the questions being presented to the viewer and filling up the WHOLE TV screen.

Perhaps in the days when we watched 24” TVs, but when most have large screens it makes it i
impossible to read and at best, very uncomfortable to move your eyes across the whole screen.

And also, soooo many questions!

bundanoonboy · 07/01/2024 21:11

I live in UK but watch american jeopardy nightly online. I was so looking forward to this new show but so disappointed. So slow and Stephen is rude and condescending to the contestants. And no one needs him to explain every answer in detail with anecdotes.

Anisette · 17/01/2024 17:01

Hellocatshome · 01/01/2024 23:13

I couldn't get past the format of answering the question with a question. It seems completely pointless and for the most part grammatically incorrect.

This! I've just been watching something where the clues were characters in ballets, so universally the contestants answered with "What is Sleeping Beauty/ Nutcracker Suite" or whatever. Manifestly if someone asked you "What is Sleeping Beauty" you would never answer with "Aurora, Prince Philip and Maleficent".

I'm almost tempted to volunteer to go on it just so that I could drive everyone mad by being pedantic and answering "Name some characters in Sleeping Beauty".

Teawithchocolate · 17/01/2024 20:34

I agree the questions don't fit with the answers. Also, I can't tell if the person that wins the game keeps the money that they won in the episode as they seem to come back the next day with a rollover figure then a few days later lose, do they lose all the money that they had previously won? It's just not exciting to watch.

Fifteen To One was better!

Oh yes, used to love this!

duc748 · 19/01/2024 14:51

TrustPenguins · 19/01/2024 14:38

Oh yes, used to love this!

I'm biased; I was on Fifteen to One a zillion years ago. I still have a videotape somewhere. 😃William G's suits looked very expensive!

whiteshutters · 20/01/2024 17:22

He is just such a bore on this. It's not intellectual - it's just a game show.

grievingandhurt · 25/01/2024 00:53

I find SF excruciating - he is so patronising and mansplains everything. Normally I love him so I was really disappointed with this.

BasiliskStare · 25/01/2024 01:28

I watched one today and got so irritated with the "you have to phrase it a question " that I thought well - I won't . It's obviously a successful format but I am not sure it works with the question thing. With quizzes people just like to shout the answer - or am I wrong .

trulyunruly01 · 25/01/2024 07:58

Stephen Fry doesn't work on a what should be a 'quick-fire' show like this. His slow and wordy delivery is fine elsewhere but not here.
And the music during the 30 second thinking time is interminably boring and doesn't fit the show.

Puppupandaway · 25/01/2024 11:56

It's awful. The writing is way too big for tv, the questions don't grammatically match the answers (agree with pp) and Stephen Fry makes it so dull. It might be better as a half hour show, but I won't be watching it again. Felt really old fashioned too.

hogmanayhoolie · 25/01/2024 13:41

I wanted to like this but it's awful

The fact he has to keep reminding them to frame answers as questions shows how clunky it is

He's not a good choice for presenter
