Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a hard-hitting ITV1 drama starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among others.

The series details one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where thousands of Post Office sub postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office follows Alan Bates (Toby Jones), a sub postmaster who decided to fight back against a scandalous miscarriage of justice.

He was one of thousands of sub postmasters and postmistresses who between 2000 and 2013 were falsely accused of theft due to financial discrepancies thrown up by the flawed Horizon computerised accounting system.

More than 700 were prosecuted and several went to prison while others lost their homes and life savings trying to pay back the money the Post Office claimed was missing.

Many were unfairly ostracised from their communities, who believed they were criminals.

In 2009 Alan Bates decided to form the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance (https://www.jfsa.org.uk/), uniting thousands of his colleagues to
fight to clear their names.

Oh I saw this advertised and wanted to watch it, as I worked in the post office 97-04.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/12/2023 14:26

Oh really @daffodilandtulip Interesting

Do you remember much about this

I don't at all

OP posts:
daffodilandtulip · 26/12/2023 14:30

I remember hating the system but nothing happened locally I don't think. It didn't come to light for a while, except maybe rumours that a few people had been caught stealing (belief at the time obv).

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 26/12/2023 14:41

Thanks Blondes. I'll definitely be watching. It's absolutely shocking what happened. BBC podcast series is worth a listen, if you like that sort of thing

I’ll be watching as I worked for Post Office from early 90s through to a couple of years ago - around 30 years in their head office. I recall that the message being given to us was very much one of ‘There are no problems with Horizon’ right up until the group litigation went against POL in 2018/9. I’ve also been following the ongoing statutory inquiry into this which provides some additional insight into the POL mindset at the time. I think this will make uncomfortable viewing particularly for those of us who were working for POL through this period.

ThePoshUns · 27/12/2023 11:14

Will definitely watch.
It's disgraceful how those innocent people were treated and are still waiting for compensation

Hope isn't too traumatic for you when on

Sadly I don't have ITV anymore. We had it years ago but TV3 and then Virgin media took the company that supplied it over and it is sh*te since.
They call the station Virgin One and it is really hit and miss what ITV programmes they deliver to us. Often without subtitles.
We can get Emmerdale and Coronation Street but I don't watch them.
I'm seriously thinking of changing to Sky as our supplier in the new year as I'm so disappointed with Virgin media.

WestendVBroadway · 27/12/2023 20:10

Completely off piste, but why is the announcer pronouncing Vs as verse instead of versus? Or am I hearing it incorrectly?

I remember bits and pieces of this in the News , looking forward to watching it .

martinisforeveryone · 29/12/2023 11:54

I can’t make my mind up if I want to watch this. I do like Toby, but I know the basics of the narrative, which go way beyond utter disgrace, and at the moment am veering towards a no.

MarilynBoo · 29/12/2023 12:23

Can anyone tell me if it includes scenes or mentions of suicide?

MarilynBoo · 29/12/2023 12:37

Ahh just realized it's not on yet!

1975wasthebest · 29/12/2023 13:55

I may give it a go, but I see there’s a lot of the usual TV people in it (Monica Dolan, Shaun Dooley etc) which I may find distracting. It will probably be a compelling story, though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/12/2023 15:21

@ThePoshUns thanks for link

@MarilynBoo starts Monday

I like to give advance warning 😂

I don't know to your question

I don't like seeing hanging scenes as being back me finding dh hung

But I tend to look Away if that is happening.

Will be watching and thanks for the reminder.

It's one of the worst scandals of misjudgment in British history.

I wish all those affected by this well and may those who died as a result of the egregious punishment RIP.

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/12/2023 18:30

Why have I not heard of anything about this

I'm 50

OP posts:
jay55 · 29/12/2023 20:02

Looking forward to this. It's such a tragic story for all the post workers who were caught up in it all.
So good to have their story properly heard.

WGACA · 29/12/2023 20:09

I can’t wait to watch this. It is such a shocking thing that happened. Someone did die by suicide tragically as a result so that might be included in the programme.

LightSpeeds · 29/12/2023 20:20

Bloody disgraceful of the Post Office. Some of those people should be in prison.

And it's STILL ongoing!

wohmum · 29/12/2023 20:24

The bbc podcast on this excellent
