He's the human equivalent of a wet blanket. He said 'I'll do it if you want me to' then made out he really wanted to and gave up his place because Fred was so keen.

I really didn't understand how Tony had become the favourite. But I liked the way he stood up to Fred there, not that it did any good.

I love how Marvin didn't really express an interest before it became apparent just how determined Fred was to do the trial.

I think he was hoping to fly under the radar as it seemed that it was only when someone said "oh Marvin hasn't done a trial" that he put in a half-hearted wish to do it
