I loved watching the box of delights when i was little. I watched an episode a week and it ended up being very Christmassy. Is there anything else similar?

Not a series but the nutcracker and the four realms has a slightly similar feel (especially at the beginning)
loved box of delights…

My children laughed at Box of Delights. They were unkind about the special effects and the whole thing really. Though we still have the books!

Green Knowe

Midnight is a Place

Lion the witch and the wardrobe always feels Christmassy in parts due to the snow.

Sodie · 25/11/2023 22:57

More recent but the snow spider.

Well if it isn’t the purple pim!

I've always wondered why this has never been adapted again into another TV show. I enjoy it, but the special effects are so laughable now.

I agree with another suggestion a PP made - The Children of Green Knowe. It's out on DVD.

Also The Return of the Antelope - maybe that's on YouTube?

I was excited when I saw 'Quentin Blake's Box of Delights' on the Christmas TV listings - I thought he'd animated a new version..

But it's not! It animations of QB stories - I'm sure it will be fine but not what I got all excited about

Scruffington · 28/11/2023 10:33

The Box of Delights was must watch TV when I was a kid. Tom's Midnight Garden has a similarish vibe. Think it might be set just after Christmas but I'm sure they go ice skating so it's wintery at least.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/11/2023 19:14

Box of Delights is currently on at the RSC in Stratford. The dirty line is a bit naff, but it's very well done.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/11/2023 19:21

We still watch the Box of Delights on dvd every Christmas, and my dc are now 15 and 18! We have great affection for the lame special effects Grin. Dh and I are going to see the theatre production of it in Stratford this weekend. I'm so excited!

DaisyGatz · 30/11/2023 19:32

The Children of Greene knowe. Was on BBC a couple of years after the box of delights.
It is on DVD. Very good and set during christmas time. I never get tired of watching it.

Nooooo there's a really sad line where one of the little (talking ,obvs) animals says something like it's always Winter but never Christmas

EnglishMenHaveTails · 01/12/2023 20:37

Nothing compares to box of delights. It's perfect in every way. We're also off to see at RSC next week and are beyond excited. I think I could recite every line from tv series as we watch every year.

@Toddlerteaplease what's the 'dirty line'?

Toddlerteaplease · 01/12/2023 20:51

@EnglishMenHaveTails I meant story line!
It's so well produced. You'll love it.

EnglishMenHaveTails · 01/12/2023 20:54

Ah, that makes sense. The storyline is indeed ridiculous but I love it all the same. I thought you were saying there was some dirty innuendo that I've innocently been missing all these years 😂

CesareBorgia · 01/12/2023 20:58

Agree with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - if you can get the original BBC serial version, it has quite similar production value to The Box of Delights.

Agree also about having a fondness for the special effects on BOD. My DVD has an extra showing the Blue Peter feature on the show, where they ramble on for about 20 minutes about how totally amazing and state of the art the effects are 😃Of course, in fairness, for the time, they were advanced.

Patrick Troughton is on Blue Peter with the boy who played Kay Harker, Devin Stanfield - Devin talks about how he wants to make a career of acting, but I couldn't find evidence by Googling that he'd carried that wish into an adult acting career.

Rainbowshit · 01/12/2023 21:00

Box of delights is my favourite. Nothing compares. My DC laugh at it too though.

MyDogSmellsTerrible · 01/12/2023 21:16

Oh God I loved that!! I have it on DVD somewhere, although no player anymore Confused

Agree with others about the children of green knowe. It was so exciting waiting for the latest episode each week.

CesareBorgia · 01/12/2023 21:18

It's not specially Christmassy although a Christmas features somewhere in the middle of it, but you might enjoy 'Carrie's War' - the version with Pauline Quirke is good.
