everytime I click on an interesting thread it opens in a new window. Plus it’s an absolute mess.
im overtired and just want to find something light to watch and this cacophonous new layout is hurting my brain

You can change it back, I believe. There's a little box near the top right of the screen with a little arrow/toggle for ON/OFF.

You can also turn it off permanently by going to Settings - Talk Settings and then choosing Compact View

I think it's so they can slip in adverts with images into the feed, and show pictures in the ads. Maybe that makes people more likely to click?
