I do think there would be more votes in it for Layton in the key SCD watching demographics if he ditched the drag and went full-on slashtastic "here are two good looking blokes doing sexy/romantic dancing together". I would absolutely have been more inclined to vote for them as Louis and Lestat.

But I guess given that he's going to get to the final and then lose no matter what he does (barring him heroically saving Princess Charlotte from a falling lighting rig mid show) he might as well go his own way and not bother playing to the gallery.

I doubt Layton cares about winning, I'd say he's there to showcase what he can already do, learn new skills and get more work in future- plus he definitely seems to be enjoying himself.

That's probably spot on.
And he is very talented, there is no denying it.

I think he and Nikita are sort of in "fuck it" mode - they probably know that they aren't going to win but will likely go far in the competition, so that gives them licence to just experiment and do their own thing. Personally I love watching them. I also think the quickstep they did was far and away their best dance, so I hope they can do more of that - good ballroom, in hold!

I do think they should be able to do whatever they want- and they are fab.

I think that they should be able to do whatever they want that is within the rules for that dance as it will look awesome to see someone really channelling the dance.

I've enjoyed some couple's choices, but I'm not a huge fan. It can go dreadfully wrong.

Layton has virtually nothing to lose right now. He knows he can really dance and has a few gymnastics skills. He was unknown to most viewers but is getting his name out there week after week on a prime time show and developing a fan base.

How big that developing fan base is becoming isn't too important to him right now. There's no way he would lose a dance off against most of the current contestants so he's safe for at least another month and most likely all the way to the final.

His focus each week is to showcase his talents to boost his post Strictly career. He doesn't need to win. Every Strictly fan and theatre producer knows the best dancer doesn't always win. Showcasing his talent doesn't equate to doing a perfect quickstep so to him the dance steps and required elements don't really matter. The judges might pull him up on it and mark him down to 8s and 9s instead of 10s but until there are only 5 or 6 contestants left he probably won't ever be in danger.

I predict in about 5-6 weeks he will do a waltz or other dance that's relatively easy to nail the feet placement and heels and be told he has really listened about getting the footwork right and score 40 so the judges can pave his way to the final. The credibility of the show depends on having some great dancing in the final and he can bring it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Layton landed a Strictly related job after this.

Layton is even good enough to be a pro himself. With Cameron gone and Neil busy with a newborn, there may well be an opportunity for him.

All in all, it's a win-win for Layton, let's face it.
Even if he ended up in the DO and was booted off, imagine the headlines... "Layton sent home by judges and fans all saying the same thing" blah blah blah.
I was dubious at first, but can't deny it, I enjoy watching him.

Why is Nikita wearing a skirt?

I don’t think Layton is good enough to join the pros. Look at the number and variety of dance awards they’ve all won between them, plus how good many of them are at choreo and teaching their celebs. I could see him presenting ITT or standing in for Claud on occasion, but not dancing. They could even consider giving him a guest judge slot if one of the usual judges had to be away for some reason, that would be ok.
